Becoming an Effective Leader

My own experience in leadership has been achieved during the last three and a half years working at Lufthansa technic Malta. The company has been operating in Malta for the last 12 years in which there has been a rapid growth in the company operations creating opportunities and developments. For the last two years I’ve had the opportunity to start working as a shop leader, developing my skills and gaining experience through qualified and experienced role models in aviation. For the past three years, Lufthansa technic Malta shop departments have developed rapidly, where positions as shop leaders and shop in charges helped to develop a more effective leadership structure. Safety awareness increased as well, in which the company invested a lot in the people’s safety equipment and personal tooling. As a result, the improved structure and development helped me a lot as a leader to implement different types of leadership styles in variety of situations with different people to achieve our goals.

There are a variety of leadership styles, in which each leader implement his or her own style. Good leaders will vary in leadership styles according to the situation and people involved. As a leader the ability to lead others and to be able to make people follow and understand your vision and goals is one of the utmost importance in leadership (Kippenberger, n.d.).

When one thinks of a leader, what type of person do we think of? Is that individual a hero that we see on television, a cartoon character, a family member, or is that person a public servant? Regardless of occupation and title, a leader is a person who inspires others and they know how to motivate people. “When they arrive, you see something about them that stands out. The inner strength of their leadership ability emerges”. (Gonzalez, 2007, February 1). Leaders are individuals in your area of work who are focused on the tasks at hand and they have a clear and concise vision on what their respective organizations are set out to do.…

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

Imagine getting into a sailboat and just going with the wind. How will you know when you get there? Heck, you don’t even know where there is. Where is this company going? What does it want to be when it grows up? What is its purpose? Create, communicate and get buy-in to a vision and get the entire team rowing your sailboat in the same direction. Focus on executing that vision, use this as a lens in which to evaluate strategic shifts. Now take the entire team in your ship and heading towards your planned goal. Are you getting closer? Are you proceeding to plan? Should you make a course change? Having a destination is critical to executing, tracking progress and managing the crew. You cannot focus on a goal and the progress you have made towards achieving that goal if you do not have a goal.…

What makes a leader? Is it someone who stands on a hill giving instructions, or someone who sits by your side and guides you to a solution? Can a leader be someone who works hard and in the process shows others that their goals are attainable. There are many ways to be a leader, but society likes to stifle the notion that if your role within a grander picture is not unlike that of a captain who grips the wheel of their ship while barking orders at their crew than you must be a crew member. The belief, that if you do not have absolute influence than you have no way of making a change, is dangerous. It tramples the creative foresight of people the world over; people who could have made significant improvements in their community, in their country, and in our world. I’m a leader because I’ve shown others around me if you work hard enough even a poor boy raised by a single mother can be afforded opportunities he would never have received otherwise.…
