Money in my family right now is very tight. This year, the day after the TMEA State Choir Convention, my dad left for Oklahoma. The same day I was watching Frozen, and my dad came home. He told me that he was fired while he was driving to Oklahoma. We hugged, and then watched the rest of Frozen together. He laughed when Olaf came on, and he listened to me reciting the lines in the play and singing all of the songs. Through his rough time, he was strong for me and continued to support me in my search for colleges. He is still currently unemployed, and I am working as hard as I can to take some of the stress off of him and my mom financially. Throughout my life, I have worked to better myself in every way possible. In my life I have become a better person in character and in choir, and I think I deserve this scholarship so I continue growing as a person and a

I realized that I would not be able to live an abundant life getting paid minimum wage. I knew that if I wanted to make a difference in my life, I would have to go back to school.…

I was in band for 2 years and in those two years I learned how to play the trumpet and how to proficiently read sheet music. In 8th grade I decided that I would again take choir and I would find that my years of experience and bettering my ear for music would pay off. I took choir for another 5 years after that and it was there that I learned two things. I learned how to play the piano which I now realize has helped me learn memorization skills and coordination. However, I also learned leadership skills. Because I eventually became proficient in my singing skill and I also was so eager to learn and better myself, I became the leader of my choir in my junior year of high school. I was then awarded the National School Choral award which was the highest achievement in high school for choral programs. After this achievement passed, I decided to continue bettering myself though choir, piano class, and music appreciation, to make myself an ideal candidate to help others with their musical journey. I have always wanted to be a music teacher because I feel that music is what teaches people how to recognize true beauty and develop insight. Music is my passion and that passion will never become burnt out. Music has been frustrating but I have never given up, I have only tried to make myself better.…

I don’t believe that I would be efficiently learning in school, doing research, or even be applying for this scholarship if it weren’t for my parents. They are the ones who push me to live a better life than them, to be the best at what I want to do, and to work hard. One of the best things they do is give me advice on how to get to where I want to be. “We know that it's hard, but you can do it,” they encourage. It truly is encouraging to have parents who believe in me. They make me to trust that I can be successful in the future. My parents truly are one of the best resources that I…

I recently found a list of goals that I had written 20 years ago. Most of the goals were realistic and I was able to achieve them. While I was checking the items off my list that I accomplished, there was one that I have debated about for many years—returning to school to earn a degree. Returning to school has always been achievable; however, as each year of my life sped by and I got older, I always came up with more and more excuses as to why I should not return to school. One day I received a course catalog in the mail showing online classes at the college. I decide that an online class would be the first step to my future. I am so grateful for the first day of that class. All the excuses and delays regarding returning to school were in vain. It is amazing the different prospective I know have about being a child verses an adult in school.…

The idea that a person cannot be friends with another person solely based upon social class, stigma, or appearance is one of the most devastating issues of the present day United States. This issue seems to be the most prevalent in high schools, where kids "clique up" and never seem to enjoy the world outside of their shell of a friend group. Being involved with athletics as well as the fine arts has opened my eyes to all of these great people and it hurt me to know they may never become friends with one another just because of the social stigma behind a "jock" or a "choir boy", so I decided to make a change. As a captain of the wrestling team and a captain of the show choir, I tend to have a lot of influence over my peers in those activities.…
