Before I can explain the role an Occupational Therapist and the Occupational Therapist Assistant will have in the recovery of a Traumatic Brain Injury patient, we first need to understand exactly what it is. The brain is made up of numerous unique parts and functions that depend on each other. Damaging the brain can have long-term side effects on an individual, depending on what part of the brain was injured. Depending on the type of brain injury this will affect the type of treatments that are essential for the brain to be able to function at a normal operating condition.…

In college my goal is to have fantastic grades and accomplish becoming a certified sports physical therapist.…
I am known to be dedicated and diligent in all that I do in academics and extra curricular activities such as marching band, swim team, clubs at school, volunteering in my community, and working a job. A guaranteed seat in the Occupational Therapy program would build my confidence and motivation, allowing me to focus on volunteering in facilities that incorporate Occupational Therapy services.…
Although vital in the practice of occupational therapy, theory can be a difficult concept to fully understand. In the simplest terms theory is the foundation for fully understanding certain behavior or health problems through observations and predictions. Through watching the client, the therapist can develop questions or assumptions that lead them to create a best guess as to why the client behaved or acted in a certain way. Afterwards, the therapist will create experiments with their guess to try and find evidence to support their assumptions. If their guess is supported, the therapist can then use their findings to better treat those who suffered…
I someday want to work as an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy (OT) as a field, focuses on a variety of physical and functional impairments. Occupational therapists and assistants work with their consumers to help them to regain functionality to be able to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, getting dressed, eating, etc. The physiology of exercise plays a huge role in therapy and is definitely incorporated into therapy sessions. One main component of OT intervention is upper-body strengthening. Strengthening exercises and activities are performed to improve the performance of weakened muscles. In conjunction with traditional weighted exercises, occupational therapists also use therapeutic activities.…

Hi, I'm Emma Cooper! I'm from Nashville and I am in the combined bachelors and MSOT program at Spalding University. I have been interested in occupational therapy from a young age because my mom is an OT. She has not practiced since I was born but I loved hearing her stories of all the amazing things she got to do to help people. During high school I volunteered at a hospital for several years and confirmed that I wanted a career within the health field. After shadowing several therapists I decided occupational therapy was a perfect fit for me. As of right now, I am leaning toward working in an adult outpatient rehab setting because that was one of my favorite observation experiences. I am not yet certain what I would like to specialize in,…
Occupational scientists study the “phenomenological aspects of occupation through qualitative research”. Occupational scientists focus on human occupation and study humans as occupational beings. This means that there is not one direct way to study occupations but rather many ways in studying occupations. This involves studying the different aspects of occupations by asking individuals about their experiences when accomplishing tasks. These different aspects include the subjective individual experiences, meanings behind participating in occupations, and bodily experiences when engaging in occupations. It is important to study these qualitative aspects along with the study of observable quantitative aspects because they go hand-in-hand with…
My ideal dream job is fixing computers I would love to do this for a living and I am currently pursuing it in school. I would do this even if I didn’t get paid for it because its fun for me I do it as a hobby already now. Being a computer technician or engineer is something I have always wanted to do since I was little when I use to take apart an old computer my dad brought home from work and I have been in love with it ever since then . I have big dreams in the area of computers by way of hoping to one day own my own computer maintenance business and creating my very own computer.…

As children, we do not fully understand the responsibilities associated with our dream job, so we say we want to be a doctor or firefighter because we only think of being heroes. We do not see the negative side. Now that I am in high school and can look at all sides of a career, I think that being an occupational therapist or elementary school teacher are possible future careers for me. Although these careers require similar personality traits, they are very different in education, salary, and work environment/schedule.…
