I Want To Be An Occupational Therapist

I wish I could say I had always known that I wanted to become an occupational therapist. Actually, it was not until recently that I learned the OT profession even existed, but I am thankful that I did discover it. I have always wanted to pursue a career in which I could help people. At first, I thought physical therapy would be the best choice for me. After having the right person at Keiser University explain me, personally and in a more detailed manner, what occupational therapy was about, and then reflecting about it, I figured OT was what my personality and my wish to help others. I believe I can relate to a lot of cases in different areas, example learning disabilities. During the time I was in elementary school my parents and the school detected some learning disabilities in me. I was placed in special classes with other students with mild to severe disabilities. My learning disability left me learning at a slower pace than the other kids at my grade level. It made me feel insecure about myself, with difficult to communicate effectively with others when I had to explain something, even though I knew the matter or topic. As indicated in the article the term “learning disability” was first introduced in 1963 as the difficulties students have in their school activities. In regard to this, occupational therapy reports promote the need to give support to the children with learning disabilities, to distinguish their writing performance, also what approaches to take and to help, including technological support. As read in the article the performance using word processor in children with learning disabilities improved their writings, being able to make longer essays, and with fewer errors, only typing at a lower speed; opposed to handwritten which were able to write faster but more errors and a shorter essays.
