Behavior Change Project

Many have a bad tendency of consuming unhealthy food rather than eat something that will benefit them. Many say it’s because “unhealthy” food is more conventional than eating “healthy” food. According to the Los Angeles Times, when one is going to work or simply heading to school one finds it easy to just stop by at a liquor store and buy a snickers and a fountain drink (2001). The food that is easily accessible when entering such stores is always junk food rather than having fruits. This has caused many problems, and one of the major one is obesity. I eat junk food at least 5 times a week and a week only consists of 7 days. This is very unhealthy and if I keep going at this pace it could have a huge impact on my health in the near future. Not only will it cause me to become unhealthy, but it can also shorten my life expectancy but quite some time. Time I would rather spend with my family in the future. I’ve seen many people that at a young age had the same bad habit as me and today some are obese or diagnosed with diabetes. As weeks went by, my amount on junk food consumed decreased to no more than once a week. Junk food was anytime of “unhealthy” food, which ranged from a simple snickers bar to a slice of chocolate fudge cake. Thankfully I was successful in achieving my goal, which was to reduce the amount of junk food I would consume. Throughout the semester, I faced many challenges. They ranged from big obstacles to simply saying no. One major challenge was to not eat any pizza at work while I was in my lunch. Even though I would take my own lunch, seeing the pizza freshly made tempted me in eating a slice or 2 but I stayed committed. Another huge challenge I faced was when I would be invited to go eat at dog house, or anywhere, by my friends. I knew that if I would go I would have fell into temptation easily. I managed to devise a way for me to go eat with my friends without having to eat junk food more than twice a day. Because I would usually get invited Fridays, I chose not to eat junk food until Friday. Like that if my friends were to invite me to go out to eat with them, I would be able to go out and eat without having to break my once a week junk food rule. This not only helped me physically but now I seriously watch what I eat to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. The beginning was hard because I was used to not eating junk food but by the

Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death. James O. Hill, PhD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, agrees. He attests that at the rate we're going, obesity-related diabetes alone "will break the bank of our healthcare system." The CDC reports that in the United States, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. Clearly this is an epidemic that proves to be harder to stop than one would think. Most unhealthy behaviors are easier to remedy than others. We know that smoking causes cancer, and therefore, the easiest way to avert that cancer is to not smoke. However, we cannot simply stop eating. People rely more and more on processed foods and fast food in their day-to-day life, or they are not eating as much processed food, but are maybe eating the wrong foods.     Obesity is a condition of having excess body weight. Today in the USA, 97 million adults are overweight, meaning that 1 out of 3 people we come across in our everyday lives may be obese. However, it is also important to understand that being overweight does not mean one is obese. Many people throw around the word ‘obese’ and are ignorant to the difference of being obese or just simply being overweight. Obesity is having too much body weight, as where people may be overweight due to high levels of muscles or water in their body. In recent times, obesity among Americans has almost doubled, causing the USA to have the highest obesity rate. There are many variables that have contributed to this rapid growth such as fast food restaurants becoming increasingly more available and less expensive, automobiles becoming the number one form of transportation rather than walking or riding a bike, and other factors that promote inactivity such as the use of cell phones, email, etc. We ignore this problem and often look beyond these factors because we consider them “standard” in our lives. Although, before obesity rates spiked, fast food was not as unhealthy or cheap, driving an automobile was only possible for a select few, and technology did not exist like it does now. In order to eliminate such high obesity rates in America I believe we must raise awareness on the damages obesity can have on our well-being. In order to so, there should be a higher emphasis put on healthy living rather than promoting fast food and other habits that are harmful to our health. There are many more solutions to this problem such as raising the price of fast food or making it healthier, but many companies are not willing to make these changes. This is why I believe that it is very important that we make Americans aware of this problem.     My problem is that I start to see positive results and began to let up and eat Sunday Soul food dinners or fried foods and it ends up being part of my daily habits, replacing all the positive, healthy ones. It is said that the maintenance stage is one that lasts from about 6 months to 5 years and is one of the most difficult stages to complete due to temptation and changes in confidence (Glanz, Rimer, & Viswanath, 2008, p. 100). On the contrary, my self-efficacy practices have been low, but I’m still able to complete my small daily activities that have already starting making positive changes in my life. The last and final phase is the termination stage in which no temptation to relapse is there and the individual has 100% confidence.
