Being Poor Research Paper
The most influential person in my life would have to be my sister. We have watched each other struggle and we have watched each other triumph. Growing up, the odds were always against us. My sister has always reminded me that no matter how difficult the world is we will make it. She has never allowed me to give up, and has always been that motivational voice in my head that tells me to push forward. Last year, my sister achieved her goal of going to college. She turned to me, and said that I am next, words that are forever in my mind.

Growing up poor has many disadvantages, being poor has led to a personal battle that has kept me sheltered and fearful of the world. Low self-esteem. Passing by a group of more than five people was always terrifying for me. Always thinking what was being said about me, and if my appearance was acceptable. Because of this, I would always dress out for gym last and never try out for a sport appalled at the thought of what others may be saying about me. Low self-esteem has kept me shielded and distanced me from anywhere that I can be judged.

All violence comes from a start point, and most of the time the start point is adults and family members within the community. Smoking, carrying guns, using profanity is all that I see and hear from my community. I would propose that all the adults should begin to act like role models especially in front of young children. Whatever young children view from an adult they portray it as acceptable and will follow suit not knowing the consequences or seeing their actions as anything but

I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

There’s a freshman in one of my classes who always wears thick, dark eyeliner and other excessive makeup. For a couple of days the other week, she stopped. The first time I saw her without makeup, it was weird; I had never seen her without it before. A few days later, she came back with eyeliner and a fresh layer of foundation on her face. I remembered the face I saw just the day before; even though the makeup was pretty, she was pretty without all the extra effects. That same day during class she told me about how there was a guy snapchatting her. They made a bet that she wouldn’t be able to go without makeup for two days. She continued to tell me how that morning, she put on her makeup and sent him a snapchat. He responded…

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

A couple days ago, my teacher gave us a chance to check our class grades. To my surprise, I had received a very dismal outlook into how I was doing in the class. It was a very, very bad grade that I don’t even want to repeat. I was stunned by this and wanted to know how this had happened in a mere 3 weeks of school. As it turns out, I had 1 really bad test grade who was the culprit. Unfortunately, now there is no chance for me to get the A that I so desired. This is why I believe that all teachers should remove each student’s worst grade from their grade book. This way all students have a fair chance at an A if for some reason they have a spontaneous bad test or homework grade, like me.…
