Within this essay my intention is to describe how a child’s place in society and other issues related to counselling children and young people have affected my work when working with this particular client.
We recently received a referral within a counselling project I work with were we aim at providing emotional support and therapeutic interventions to any person identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered.
Throughout my essay I will refer to my client as Jim. This referral is regarding a 16 year old boy, who refers to himself as being Gay. Within his family home his Mother and Father have recently separated and his Father has moved out of the family home. I completed an initial assessment with Jim and deemed him to be Gillick competent. I feel that I must be mindful that a child, even from a very early age, develops relationships with the people around them. Therefore the life experiences of the whole family will affect how a young person develops and their outlook on life. All families have shared life experiences but each member of the family will remember different aspects of the event and be affected by it in different ways. The individual family members are seen as ‘elements’ or ‘sub-units’, each having a significant influence on each other. From a systems perspective Jim is part of many inter related systems including his home, family, school, care system, legal system and society as a
