The two main protagonists Lena (Danielle Hall) and Vaughn (Damian Pitt) have an aspiration to escape negative and marginalized futures. Vaughn and the other young male characters seem to identify with hip-hop and rap cultures as a way of finding solidarity amongst the disadvantage and prejudice. In one of the first scenes of Vaughn, a poster of Tupac, a American rap singer is hung on his wall. Vaughn may see Tupac as a role model, as a strong black man, and for the reasons of rebellion against the repression of white people.
