There are several important themes found throughout the film “A Walk to Remember.” These themes helped teach valuable life lessons about love, faith, and superficiality. In this film we realize how big of an impact, a simple event can have on a person’s life. These little things can inspire us to turn our lives’ around; they can also encourage us to be better versions of ourselves. Events like falling in love with the right person can have a life changing effect on someone’s life. This concept is portrayed in the film when Landon Carter, the bad boy, falls in love with the minister’s daughter Jamie Sullivan. Jamie and the love Landon has for her changes Landon into a kinder and more determined individual. Two significant themes displayed throughout this film are love conquers all superficiality and judgment based on appearances.
Love conquers all means that no matter what happens love can never be defeated and is unconditional. Death cannot extinguish the power of love. Love can overpower the hardships of life. In the film, when Landon is looking at the water, and thinking of Jamie, he states that “love is like the wind, you can’t see it but you can feel it.” This quote means that although love doesn’t have a certain appearance you can feel love’s effects in your heart. Landon will always be able to feel Jamie’s love. Even though, he can’t physically see Jamie, she will always remain in his heart. Therefore, love can conquer all and triumph over evil.
Superficiality and judgments based on appearances is a common theme throughout this film. This theme revolves around the quote “don’t judge a book by its cover.” This film recognizes society’s flaws in the way people are viewed. It shows how people are easily misjudged based on their appearances rather than who they truly are on the inside. Landon Carter is originally considered to be popular and tough.
