In the book Th1rteen R3easons Why by Jay Asher, There are different symbols that presented itself in the book, that rumors can spread quickly and can cover up the truth. One of the symbols were the color of blue, in which is found a lot, like on the tapes, her nail color, in which it means the color of sadness. Another symbol was the scars because, it represents that you have something you would never forget, and sometimes it doesn’t have to be visible. Lastly, another symbol is the rocket ship because it talks about how it was Hannah's happy place and gave her good memories from her past. This story shows how people can get affected by what others say to them, and can hurt them physically and mentally and something bad can happen to them. “And there in your eyes, what was it? Sadness? Pain? You moved around me and tried pushing your hair away from your face. Your fingernails were dark blue.” (259). Clay was having a flashback to when he last saw Hannah through the halls and how she looked like, when he saw her and how sad she looked. Also, it was a dream about what was happening in the park and dreaming about Justin and imagining how they will meet at the park. After that they met, rumors started to spread on what happened when they kissed. Symbolism is something that many others use in their writing to give meanings without coming out and saying it. The dictionary states symbolism as “the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations as artistic imitation or invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible truth or states.” When authors do this it lets readers get different ideas as what they mean as they read the story, which makes them think a lot more as they read the story. This story has a lot of symbolism, most of it…

Another important theme is competition and games. In the novel, the boys are very competitive and play many sports. The most important contributor to this theme is Finny, because when playing games he is unable to comprehend the fact that there are winners and losers and opposing teams in sports. Finny says “"You always win at sports." This "you" was collective. Everyone always won at sports.” He seems to believe that everyone is a winner which adds to his image of pureness. This theme is consistent throughout most of the novel but changes somewhat when Finny breaks his leg. He is no longer able to play sports, which was one of his favorite things to do.…

All Hannah wanted in the story was for someone to care for her, little did she know, Clay did. It’s ironic because Hannah expresses interest for Clay in one tape and if he would’ve not been so shy towards her, maybe she wouldn’t of had to commit suicide. This is an example of appearance vs. reality because Clay appeared like he had no interest in Hannah, when in reality he actually did. The author states, “But I wasn’t alone. I knew that. For the first time in a long time, I was connecting--connected--with…

Keeping the same theme gives the same message to both movie and book. Themes of stories give the overall experience to the works. By clearly addressing the fact that teenagers are unaware of the actions that they are clearly too premature to be involved in for Smooth Talk and also in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been. In the book it shows how when a teenager girl, like Connie, gets involved in thing adolescences shouldn’t be engaged in, it can lead her to a place where she has no control over the outcome of her life. She could have been killed, raped, ended up with a disease or pregnant, the book leads you to your own interpretation. Although the movie does clear up the interpretation somewhat and leaves Connie back safely at home with her family, you do not know what’s in store for her future. When Connie and Arnold Friend were alone in the meadow, your interpretation of what is going on is the same as in the book, she could’ve been being raped, we don’t know, and though she does end up home she still has consequences of that ride with Arnold Friend.…
