Christopher Columbus is one of America’s most celebrated murderers, cheaters, and thieves. Responsible for thousands of Native American lives, Columbus forcibly took control over the Americas with the army of Spain on his side. Yet this man is still renowned for his actions and rewarded with an annual nation-wide holiday. Christopher Columbus was merely a power hungry, genocidal maniac and should be viewed as such.…

My first reason as to why we should not celebrate Columbus Day is the simple fact that he did not discover America; there were already a large population of human beings living there. The people who inhabited the Americas prior to Columbus’s arrival were culturally diverse people who were skilled famers, hunters, and gatherers. The Native Americans built cities, developed organized economies, and had their own religious beliefs. “Most archaeologist agree that the Western Hemisphere’s first human inhabitants came from northeastern Asia (Davidson ).” Instead, it is more accurate to say that Christopher Columbus helped rediscover America.…

today Christopher Columbus is one of two people to have their name marked on a national holiday. If we knew the true facts of Christopher Columbus would we be less likely to celebrate and honor him on that day? Christopher Columbus was ooking for a new route to the east to get spices because the Turks closed the land route. After two months at sea he landed in the West Indies. He found a new contient, so we were taught. For centuries fishermen and seamen had known the earth was roung. The Turks made money from the land routes being open so they had not reason to close the land routes. Europeans had been fishing off of Newfoundland in 1480's. For thousand of years the Irish an dPhoenicians had visited Canada and New England, Columbus' purpose fro the beginning was not exploration or trade, but conquest and exploitation. the fact that sailors carried small pox, bubonic plague adn influenza killed a very large percentage of the natives everywhere they went. Taking of land , wealth and labor from the natives which caused their near extermination and the transatlanti slave trade which created racial underclass were introduces by Columbus that revolutionized race relations and transformed the modern world. Columbus was only doing what any other person under the ruling of a king and queen would have done back then, to serve and please them in any way possible. He wanted to show himself to his king in queen. Christopher of course is known for discovering America, but on the way there he did things that are frowned upon now. On his discovering he made the Natives into slaves, forced them to as he please or they would get punished. Columbus should not be bashed upon for his prejudices and brutality, back then it was all around the world and everybody was doing it, it wasn’t a wrong thing at this time.…

Christopher Columbus day should not remain a holiday because it is just another event on the calendar to keep track of and it could make some native American tribes aggravated if it stays. Even if Columbus day isn’t as bad as it seems, the people have the right to want to get rid of it. Although some people will get mad if this day leaves, they should know that “Columbus was a cruel slave trader who brought about the mass killing of native people.”. Columbus day was supposed to be a day when America was found, but others go deeper than that and want to get rid of it. All people, Americans and Native Americans get to have a say in this, whether it be to stay or it is to…

Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, represents the day Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas. America should no longer continue to celebrate Columbus Day because he had a miserable legacy, he did not really discover America, and he was cruel. He had a bad legacy because he committed genocide, started slavery and racism. Columbus did not really find the United States, there were indigenous people there already that were settled and lived off the land. On top of all that he was very cruel, he would cut their hands off if they did not give him the quarterly quota of gold dust, he roasted the chiefs in fires, and his treatment was so bad that people tried to kill themselves .…

The portrayal of Christopher Columbus as a statue caused an uproar of left wing citizens because of the negative factors Columbus brought into America regarding slavery and his greediness to find success within his journey. However, this doesn't give the right for these citizens to destroy his statue just because it offends them, which is technically taking away the freedom of speech. On the other hand, this Christopher Columbus holiday is another reason these liberals are furious because of the idea of celebrating an event that is looked upon as a negative one. Essentially this is a part of history and the citizens have no possibility to change it, but only learn from the mistakes to shape the present day into a better…

My opinion on columbus day is that columbus day is a worthless day that should be not celebrated. It should be a day that should be in memory for the indians that was sex slaves or raped till they died or committed suicide. After learning how cruel Columbus was, I don't believe he deserves to have a holiday after him. Why would anyone want a holiday after someone who killed people without a proper reason, or just because they didn't follow through with an order given to them? Columbus told them to do when he in fact was a bad leader. I think the holiday should stay, but have the name changed.…

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Many people know this saying and the story behind it. Everyone knows who Columbus is and what he did. Although, they do not know the horrible things that went on when he reached the Americas. Most people know the story of how he thought the earth was flat and how he could get to India by moving west across the ocean. They know he reached the Americas and thought it was India. However, this is not the whole story. We celebrate Columbus Day in honor of him finding the Americas. Even though he did find the Americas, does not mean what happened when he got to the Americas were all good things. We should not celebrate Columbus Day because he treated the Native Americans horribly, he took men, women, and children as slaves over to Europe, and he would do…

Columbus day is a national holiday in America celebrating the man that “discovered’ America. The problem is that he did nothing good for America. He brought slaves and disease to America, or what he thought was Asia. Columbus was an Italian, when Italy didn’t want to pay for his voyages he went to Spain's king and queen to ask them for the money, they agreed on the condition that he paid them back. When Columbus got to what he thought was Asia, but in reality was the caribbean islands, he captured slaves and sent them back to spain. This didn’t make him as much money as he hoped because most of the slaved died on the ships returning from the caribbean. When he went back he had the help of hundreds of slaves to help him find gold. When the…
