In the epic poem, Beowulf, a fierce and brave warrior named Beowulf goes into combat against three different opponents. At first glance, the adventures of Beowulf seem very similar. However, when taking a closer look at a few selections from Beowulf, the reader might notice that each battle is different in many ways.
The first battle Beowulf encounters is against a monster called Grendel. Beowulf had traveled to Herot to help defeat this powerful beast. Beowulf is young at this time. What makes this battle very different is that when Beowulf is at battle with Grendel, he uses no weapons to defeat this monster, only his great strength. At the end of the fight, Beowulf uses his powerful strength to rip off Grendel’s arm and defeat the monster. Grendel goes back into a cave to die and Beowulf carries the arm back to show his comrades that he was victorious in the fight.

Grendel’s mother’s lair is underwater, and Beowulf has to travel there to try and defeat the monster. This battle is much more difficult for Beowulf and he struggles to slaughter the beast. In the end, Beowulf kill Grendel’s mother with a sword he found on the wall. This shows that Beowulf isn’t undefeatable, that even he sometimes needs a weapon to kill strong opponents.
Beowulf’s last battle is against a fierce dragon. The strong warrior, Beowulf, is now elderly, at the end of his life, and again brings weapons and armor. Beowulf battles the dragon out of greed, to capture the dragon’s treasure. He brings many men to help with the battle, however only one stays with to help. With the help of one soldier, Beowulf fights the dragon, but Beowulf is wounded fatally by the dragon and dies. Even though Beowulf fought his hardest, that is no
