Beowulf Leadership Qualities
Leaders lead groups of people or organizations. Groups would not function to its full potential without the presence of a leader. Chiefs take charge of tasks at hand. Ships do not reach their destinations without captains. Kingdoms do not excel without kings. Beowulf demonstrates real leadership. He shows strong attributes of a great leader such as kindness, loyalty and courage.
Kindness displays when showing compassion for others. Courage displays when one does something that others would not. Geatland’s warrior shows these attributes when he decides to defeat Grendel for the Danes. Man eating beast Grendel already slaughters and eats many Danes. Beowulf displays great kindness for offering to kill Grendel for Hrothgar, King of the Danes.

Beowulf was significantly glorified all through the book; even when he died his men mourned his loss, built him a tower, and buried the entirety of his treasures underneath it. The Geats and the Danes knew a hero of Beowulf’s status would never again come to pass. Beowulf had amazing leadership; he would never lead anyone where he would not go, and his men glorified him of that. He had superior strength, intelligence and courage. Beowulf’s strength could not be contested, as he was able to kill Grendel bare handed and rip a sword off a wall that only giants used. Under no conditions could an ordinary man achieve such a feat. Beowulf could swim for hours and fight monsters in the raging sea. Even at old age, Beowulf took on the battle of slaying the dragon. Beowulf was undeniably a strong and responsible leader. He prepared for the future of his warriors when he reached his eventual demise. His men, mourning his loss, wept, knowing a man of Beowulf’s strength and leadership would never come again.…

In the article after reading this comparison by Dr Tom Loughman and Dr John Finley in beowulf and the teaching of leadership , I can tell what point they are trying to create when they compared leadership and beowulf. To let you know what this excerpt is basically the authors annotating and citing evidence as to show their leadership in story of beowulf. They go through each chapter and give a description of what happened and they say their opinions too about it. The authors also shows us how beowulf has the feature of a charismatic hero and potential drawback of charismatic leadership.in my opinion the best comparison they made was conger and kanungo's stating how this created the standard of what charismatic leadership is and the historical background of beowulf and i agree with how leadership does play a very good role in the story of beowulf.…

Beowulf is also able to demonstrate his leadership qualities in his older days in Geatland. Following the death of Hygelac rises an important transitional moment for Beowulf. Instead of rushing to the throne he steps back and supports Hygelac son, the rightful heir. With this gesture of gratitude and respect of the throne, he proves himself worthy of kingship. In this part of his life, Beowulf must now base his decisions on the good of the people, rather then for his own glory, differ from his days as a heroic warrior. An example of this is when Beowulf decides to kill the dragon that had just mercilessly burned the Geats home’s and lands. Beowulf and his Thanes set out to kill the Dragon. Upon seeing it, the Thanes immediately flee, leaving only Wiglaf to battle at Beowulf’s side. This proves that Beowulf is still a courages warrior and a rightful leader, willing to risk his life to protect his people.…
