"Bernie" is an outrageous dark comedy that you must see to believe. Based on a true story, “Bernie” tells the tale of a small town’s beloved mortician who almost gets away with murder. The film takes place in Carthage, Texas, where Bernie Tiede is hired on as a funeral director at the local funeral home. Bernie is popular with all the locals, especially the recently widowed. After the passing of her husband, millionaire Marjorie Nugent takes to Bernie’s kindness. An odd friendship blossoms and the pair soon become inseparable. Marjorie grows increasingly demanding and possessive of Bernie, until one day he snaps and ends her life by shooting her in the back. Based on the shocking twists in the story, Jack Black’s campy portrayal of Bernie, and the use of interviews with real locals, Bernie is a comedic take on a real-life crime that is well worth the watch.
It convinces the audience that Bernie is incapable of hurting a fly, much less committing a murder. The fact that he shoots Marjorie four times, hides her body in a freezer for nine months, and keeps up the charade that she’s still alive came as an unbelievable turn of events. Another equally surprising twist is the town’s reaction once Marjorie’s body is discovered, and Bernie is charged with her murder. No one can believe that Bernie is capable of such a crime. Even after his confession, the town is quick to come to his defense and justify his actions.
