Sanders' contends in his essay that American society has molded Americans into embracing anonymity and abandoning the "common life" and the social interaction that goes along with it. At many times throughout my young life I have already felt deeply disturbed by the lengths to which greed, envy, lust, and temptation drive so many of our nations individuals. Corruption infests the ranks of our country's leadership, and a profound lack of moral values has infected our younger generations.…

Populist language has been utilized by American politicians since the nineteenth century, and that trend certainly did not end during the 2016 presidential campaign. Michael Kazin defines populism as, “a language whose speakers conceive of ordinary people as a noble assemblage not bound narrowly by class, view their elite opponents as self-serving and undemocratic, and seek to mobilize the former against the latter.” The majority of Bernie Sanders speeches included this language, and this helped him gain popularity from voters throughout the country. Sanders was an ideal candidate for the so-called common man, as he was straightforward with his disgust of billionaires and the inequality of wealth in the country. His negative claims towards…

Sanders’ primary appeal is pathos, and he uses it in various ways to illustrate his purpose. Firstly, his diction demonstrates use of pathos, because the author incorporates words with emotional contexts and meanings such as “seductive”, “unglamorous”, “tolerance”, and “respect”. Second of all, Sanders connects with the reader and their feelings through the use and repetition of personal pronouns, especially “we”, “our”, and “you”. On the same note, the author employs words such as “people”, “human”, and “Americans” to appeal and relate to a particular yet diverse group, pulling them into what the writer is truly trying to say and attempting to make their emotions grow stronger for what Sanders is speaking about. Finally, Sanders utilizes pathos…

Sanders view on gender roles is completely based on his own experiences. He clearly shows support and sympathy towards men because he had witness the hard work his own father had to go through just to be able to give his family a better life. Sanders father worked his way out of being a laborer to a white-collar worker. This shaped his perspective that men are progressive and women will always have the same responsibilities, which is to take care of the household. I would say that my view on gender role is different from Sanders. I grew up in an environment similar to Sanders, where the lack of opportunity forced men to explore different possibilities in life. When I was young, my parents got divorced, so my mother had to raise me and my siblings single handedly. Although my father supported us financially, I never really saw how hard he worked, or the kind of work that he had. Being raised by my mother gave me a different perception on gender roles. In the environment I grew up in, women can chose to work if they wish to. My mother had a job when she was raising us,…
