The Better-Nevers of Social Media
“Closer to people I’m far away from, but maybe farther from the people I’m close enough to” (Rose, 613) This short post perfectly sums up social media. Written by the author of the article, Josh Rose’s friend, he explains his feeling on the revolution of the internet. Josh Rose himself believes that the social media movement has brought forth positive changes. His examples not only include his friend who was able to reach people from far away but his son who is now able to have those daily mundane talks without having to see his father day to day. Rose also brings up information about a post he recently viewed on Facebook, the headline reading “In China, microblogs finding abducted kids” in which he states that their form of social media was able to save children as young as the age of six from their abductors. For those who shake as they glide their fingers against the keyboard awaiting the slue of bad mouthing and name calling, social media has become their worst nightmare. It is a portal in which sleep does not exist and that at any time, day or night, an on slaughter of bulling occurs. It is difficult to say that social media is positive when it allows such things as bulling to occur. Rose mentions reading positive articles about different experiences where Facebook and other websites have came in handy to bring forth positive changes. It is easy to say, that for every article that Rose reads about the favorable efforts these websites can bring, that he will also be able to discover articles that state that the same websites have lead to teenage suicide and body issues. Even the good cannot out weigh the bad. In 2011 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducted a Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey that stated 16.2% of kids had been bullied online

The Pew Research Center published results of a survey that shows 92% of teens, identified as 13-17 year olds in this survey, go online daily. From this research we can see how affected young adults and teens are affected by social media and although social media affects all sorts of people, it seems that social media affects young adults and teens to a greater extent. In a survey published by the National Crime Prevention Council, around 40% of teens were cyber-bullied. The social issues teens face differs from feeling insecure about themselves to feeling pressured about always looking their best. Some find the use of a “selfie” as empowering while others use it as a measure to determine their worth by how many like or hearts they receive for that “selfie”. Although the online world manages to a produce solid amount of social hardships, the real world produces still produces its share of social issues. Face-to-face bullying is still common and teens are still facing the social issue. While bullying, whether online or in person, seems to result with more deaths in suicides than actual happy endings, there are those who still have endured their share of social problems to become happier people.     Find me on Twitter, Facebook, and even MySpace, because we are here to change the world so “follow” me. I have read the writings of Malcolm Gladwell and Dennis Baron to analyze and write about. They have both presented different points and ideas on the significance of social media and how it has affected our world past and present. Gladwell’s essay, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” is focused on the sit-in of 1960, an event started by four African American college students who went to a local diner for service, but were denied because of their race. This turned into a historic protest, stretching across the Deep South from North Carolina to as far as Texas, involving as many as 600 other protesters in a time when there was no internet or social media; not including the amount of police force and other organizations called in to try and stop the whole thing. He also feels that social media is not associated with strong activism such as this. While Dennis Baron’s story, “Reforming Egypt in 140 Characters?” is focused on the uprisings in the Middle East and how natives have organized and used social media and other lines of communication to spread their views to overthrow political powers. Although that is true he also points out that the government can manipulate the sites by putting up firewalls, and filtering the news that is spread; thus making it hard for social media to make a hug impact on revolutions that take place. Although Gladwell and Baron both address the role social media may or may not play in activism with a well-thought- out argument, I find Baron’s argument most persuasive because he presents current facts about how the Twitter Revolution was credited with fostering the ousting of former Middle Eastern presidents and the support it has provided for other protest over the last year.
