While reading this book I learned that during World War II Joseph Stalin was just as bad if not worse than Hitler. Like Hitler, Stalin tried to wipe “anti-soviet” people off the face of the earth. He killed millions of innocent people. I also learned that the conditions at the labor camps were completely unbearable. The Siberian winter is very harsh, especially without the necessary clothing and food. This book is fiction but the events that take place were inspired by what really happened. I think it is a very good historical book.
In a way I can relate to Jonas because I am the youngest of three and my older brothers always take care of me. When we had family issues in the past, I was like Jonas and did not know what was going on exactly, and throughout that experience my parents stayed calm to keep me calm and my oldest brother did his best to make me happy and care for me. During that experience I had to grow up quickly, like Jonas, to help my family get through it. I had to stay strong, and have the strength to be there for my brother.
While working on the test, I learned more in depth about the book. By that I mean I had to think about the book not only in black and white but beyond that. I had to use my imagination and put myself in the characters shoes. I had to think extensively about the book in order to come up with questions. I also had my memory
