The Impacts of a World beyond Reality
Crunchyroll, one of the biggest international online communities focusing on anime and manga, had a forum about the negative effects of anime in the lives of the members themselves. Many participants answered that most of their time were spent at watching animes or reading mangas. As a result, they became sleep deprived. In the worse case, they flunked at some of their subjects in school because of not putting enough time at studying.
They also said that they suffer some health problems. For an instance, a member said, “hello high eye degrees,” indicating that his vision became blurrier.
Some members said that they’ve become anti-social because they prefer to watch anime than going out. They even labeled themselves as “hermits” or people who live in solitude. Some said that they always tend to daydream and “forget [about] reality.” In deep sheet, some became depressed and had suicidal thoughts. The specific reason for this is unknown though.
However, these otakus stated that these effects are basically cause by their lack of discipline and unmanaged time. Similar with everything, anime, when taken excessively, will have bad turn-outs. Still, why do we, otakus, continue to watch anime? If we will weigh the bad and good effects of it, the latter will be heavier, proving that this hobby makes us better at certain aspects.
Generally, for otakus like me, anime is a form of entertainment; as a result, watching anime takes away our stress. Most likely we will choose an anime with a comedic sense with it.
But certain animes, particularly those with themes about the society, widens one’s perspectives. Personally, the animes I love have this kind of motif. Two of my favorites, Death Note and Code Geass, talks about the rotten society where one hungers for power. They have main characters who disguised as the
