BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY
BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY
By URJIT ZAVERI 14BLS119
On the night of December 2, 1984 forty one metric tons of methyl isocyanate also known as MIC was released from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. After one year of this incident almost 1800 people dies in this disaster and 320,000 people had been affected by it. By 1991,around 4000 people dies because of the gas in their body.
Union carbide was a U.S company that started manufacturing pesticides in Bhopal, India. The valve malfunctioned on the 2nd December 1984 because of which a lot of water got inside the storage tanks where MIC was stored. MIC is very harmful when it comes in contact with water. It starts heating and it turns into a gas which can be very fatal if inhaled. Within 2 hours the storage tank was empty and all the gas was out there in the city. The wind carried the cloud of gas to a vast area of 40 sq km. The next morning, several thousands were discovered lying dead on the streets of Bhopal, filled with fluid and in some cases holes appeared in the lungs due to the reaction with MIC.
To date, they claim 20,000 have died and 150,000 are chronically ill and clean-up efforts are not up to date. Communities around Bhopal drinking water are still contaminated. Women are having gynaecological problems and are giving birth to babies that have birth defects. Thousands of seriously affected survivors have suffered such extensive lung damage, that they no longer can apply themselves physically. Their vision often gets blurred, spells of dizziness overtake them and walking briskly even for a few minutes sends them gasping to their knees, their chests aching.

Now the major question that arises in my mind is, was it an accident or not. I am asking this question because this catastrophe could be avoided if the four safety measures were working and if the company had told the people what to do in case of such an incident.
1 the refrigeration system was switched off which could have kept the MIC cool and not turn it

No plan existed for coping with a disaster of this magnitude . Lifeless bodies lay in the streets, beds remain occupied with people who will never breathe again, hospitals begin to overflow to people experiencing blinding, vomiting, and dysesthesia of the lungs . From the streets you could hear the screams of pain in the crisp, melancholy, toxic air . When day breaks there will be silence . What is done is done . This tragic event struck everyone by surprise, but the biggest shock was based upon how such an event occurred. After drastic studies investigators have not yet determined the source of the fire. In the early hours of August 17, 1975, a tragic disaster occurred on the Gulf Oil refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This horrific disaster took the lives of eight firefighters, and potentially could have taken more lives if it wasn’t for the help of many surrounding fire stations. The cause of the fire was the overfilling of Tank 231. While no crude oil escaped from the tank as a result of being overfilled, large quantities of hydrocarbon vapors were trapped above the surface of the tank’s crude oil. As the quantity of crude oil increased, these hydrocarbon vapors were forced out of the tank’s vents and into the area of the No.4 Boiler House where the initial flash occurred. The overfilling of the tank resulted from a failure of the tanker’s personnel to properly monitor the quantity of crude oil being pumped to the tank. This whole disaster could have been avoided by just double checking the amount of crude oil in Tank 231.…

The collapsing of the towers created a mixture of environmental pollutants and carcinogens consisting of debris of cement, glass fibres, and toxic chemicals. These toxins have not only affected New York's living environment, but also the people living within it. For instance, thousands of rescue workers are still, a decade later, at a greater risk of maturing cancers and respiratory illnesses. The first responding rescuers had been reassured that the air…

The Environmental Protection Agency 's air quality scale, any pollution rating above 300 means the air was unsafe to breathe. Under these conditions, people stayed indoors with an air purifier running and remain as motionless as possible when air population was active according to U.S. Embassy Beijing guidelines. (www.sphtc.org/timeline/timeline.html). ‎China’s water population had caused thousands of dead pigs floating past Shanghai, dramatic though they are, may be the least of China 's water pollution worries. In January, a chemical accident leaked benzene, a known cancer-causing agent, into a tributary of the Huangpu River (where the dead pigs were discovered). More than 20 people were hospitalized as a result, according to the Wall Street Journal, and area residents were forced to rely on fire trucks to deliver safe drinking water. The U.S. water pollution contributes to disease, in the 1900’s; so people were told that they can 't put their garbage in or around water. Unfortunately, as this essay has shown, this disaster could have been avoided with better safety precautions along with the testing of their safety procedures. Plus, preparing for emergencies was not given proper priority and the understanding of the signs of an error were not recognized fast enough. As discussed, the cement was faulty, valves were faulty and there was no gas alarm. These issues could have been prevented with better quality control and training. Hopefully the world has learned from our mistakes and nothing like this happens…
