Big Red Movie Analysis
Everyone is dressed to the nines, tickets held tight in their hands, with the smell of fresh grass in the air; Welcome, to the fabulous world of horse racing! The announcement is made to get the horses in place. Next, the trumpet sounds, and the crowd goes wild as the horses exit the gates. “Secretariat”, the story of the great Triple Crown winning Colt is also a story about being the underdog, facing the odds, and never giving up; something we all can relate to in some way or another. In this movie both Secretariat “Big Red” and his owner Mrs. Helen “Penny” Tweedy-Chenery had to face some rather different, but equally trying circumstances .In comparison, they were both stubborn in their own right, but had a mutual understanding of each other; matched with a highly driven will to win. Obviously there are differences between the two, one is a human and the other is a horse. But there was more to their differences. For one you have Penny who was stern yet humble in her ways, and often shied away from the lime light although when it came to Big Red she was overly confident in …show more content…
Arthur “Bull” Hancock, paired with a couple of lost races due to Secretariat having an abscess, Penny began to lose faith because everyone was telling her that the races are longer and the horse are much faster heading in to the race for the Triple Crown, and that his winning streak just may be over. After seeing Eddie Sweat and Big Red listening to “Oh Happy Day” by The Edwin Hawkins Singers; gave her the strength and peace of mind to believe that everything she was doing was not in vain. The time away from her kids, and the bullying from the other horse owners; she final understood that everything was worth it. Through it all Penny and Secretariat were the underdogs. Not only did Secretariat win the Triple Crown, but he won it in a manner that no other horse after him has yet to come close to. And Penny was able to save her father’s

The sheer amount of historical accuracy maintained throughout Seabiscuit far outweighs Walt Disney’s portrayal of Secretariat. In Seabiscuit, each of the main character’s personal struggles is told throughout the first part of the film. These struggles show how the characters came together in real life, provides the audience with an adequate understanding of the effect of the Great Depression on them and allows the viewers to connect emotionally to them as well. In Secretariat, many of the people who were major parts of his journey were completely omitted. The overall feel of the film is very Disney like; in the essence of follow your dreams and they will come true. Ultimately, Walt Disney turned Secretariat into just another dramatic fairy tale. Too many actual events and characters were left out of the film, which in turn, took away from the real drama of Secretariat’s story. Seabiscuit incorporates a narration of the times and also includes historic photos and footage that capture the era. Unlike Secretariat, Seabiscuit manages to not only maintain historical integrity but is quite entertaining as well. Thus making Seabiscuit the clear winner.…

Despite it all, Seabiscuit appears at Santa Anita to compete once again for the title of greatest money winner of all time. During the race, however, the horse Count Atlas pulls alongside, pushing Seabiscuit toward the wall. The act is an obvious foul, but the horses are out of view of the reviewing stand, so the foul goes undocumented. As Woolf pulls away, his first reaction is to whack the other jockey with his whip. It works, and regaining his competitive spirit, Seabiscuit dives down the track, neck and neck with another contender, Stagehand. The horses hit the finish line at exactly the same time; once again, Seabiscuit is denied the photo finish.…

This story, one of my favorite tales, is about grit and willpower and how anything can be accomplished through perseverance. Around the midway point of the book you receive the depiction of America during World War II and are shown how a horse generated more news and popular than the president Roosevelt and Hitler himself. My feedback towards this book is positive everybody who wants to hear about how hard work really pays off should read this. It was not just the heart of the horse that achieved greatness, but also the heart of the three men who put everything they had into the animal. Very similar to the film, the book contained exactly what I was expecting to find. An amazing story about an underdog who fights the odds and overcomes the difficulty set in front of him to achieve greatness has always been a great type of story to read. This type of theme is used repeatedly and can be found with difficulty, but it is so interesting to me because of the time setting and…

All though history, horses have been symbols of power and grace. Gigantic herds of mustangs were once seen galloping on the American frontier. Alice Walker brings you to her reality, with the story of a beautiful horse named Blue. She uses great imagery, personification and socially thought provoking analogies to build emotional sentiment for her central ideas and effectively persuade you to see her point of view. She incorporates her techniques so well that the reader is left with an entirely new, or at the very least, greatly supported view of a horse’s life and animal captivity.…

I used the before, during, and after reading comprehension strategies for reading The Rocking Horse Winner to understand the story better. Using the before strategy, I discovered the purpose of reading was to meet course expectations and comprehend what I was about to read. I decided to read the story slowly and cautiously to make connections, get involved, and create mental images. I only had the title and first few sentences to ponder upon before actually reading the story. I thought it was about a beautiful woman with many advantages. I immediately wondered if the rocking horse brings luck to her. As I started reading word to word, I noticed that the woman is not perfect. The family could not afford to live an expensive lifestyle but yet managed to, which destroyed their happiness. Strangely, the mother could not love her children; their family was missing love. As I kept reading, I wondered if Paul could actually prove to his mother how lucky he is. I asked myself, why is the little boy so attached with the rocking horse? The rocking horse is actually lucky for the little boy, and then I started to understand this story more. I started to make images in my head, as the story got intense. I can just imagine when his mom saw him rocking his horse and shouting names, just two days before the race. Quickly, It came into my mind that one of my friends actually thinks that his pen is lucky, and he makes sure to not let anyone use it or touch it. It all made sense to me, but I kept wondering about the father. The father was barely mentioned in the story, I wondered if the author purposely did this? Maybe the father was not so concerned about his family, or was he too busy working day and night to bring money for his family? This story was mainly about odd relationships between each of the family members because of luck and money. Overall, the message of this story is that one needs to work hard to live the way they want, not everyone is lucky and luck is not…

When her father is taken ill, it is up to Trica and her friends and brothers to take up more responsibilities that include exercising the horses for upcoming races and ensuring that the farm is kept in good working order. She has to do all these while ensuring that she does not neglect her school work as that would make her be at loggerheads with her mother. Tricia is a likable protagonist whose strong will is well beyond her years. For the most part she makes the hardest of decisions and takes responsibility to make her father and mother proud, even as she seeks to fulfill her dreams of racing the Kentucky Derby. In fact most of the characters in the series are honest and good people that help each other in their time of need. The only villain in the novel is Evanston's father illness which burdens the young girl with an overwhelming amount of worry and work. Lauraine Snelling writes good narrative of courage in the face of adversity as Tricia not only loses her father to the illness but she wades through the tragedy to become a several time winner of local horse races and the Kentucky…
