Sightings of Bigfoot
In the Himalayas of Asia, it is known as a Yeti; in the Pacific Northwest of America it is known as Bigfoot. Bigfoot is described as a large, hairy, muscular, ape-like creature, covered in hair ranging from black to dark red. This creature stands anywhere from six to ten feet in height and weighs somewhere in between six hundred and nine hundred pounds. The enormous footprints for which it is named after range anywhere from four inches long to twenty-seven inches long; however, the average recorded length of a footprint is fifteen and a half inches long (Fahrenbach). There are many similar characteristics recorded about Bigfoot. However, some of the most diverse includes the climate the creature was spotted in, how the creature appeared like, and what the creature was doing when it was spotted.

eight inches wide with only four toes (Krystek). During the year of 1924, it turned out to be an outstanding year in Bigfoot history (Fig. 1). There were three major sightings that occurred. The first sighting was by a Canadian lumberjack named Albert Ostman. He was near Toblet Inlet when he was captured by a family of Bigfoots. He mentions that while the father and daughter guarded him, the mother and son prepared meals. After about a week, Ostman was able to slip away. However, he never told his story until 1957, fearing people would think him to be crazy. The second sighting in 1924 was near Mount St. Helens, Washington. A group of miners spotted a Bigfoot, and killing the creature. Later that night, the miner’s cabin was surrounded by the creature’s friends. They threw rocks at the building, pounded on the walls, and climbed on the roof until dawn. The miners packed up and abandoned the mine the next day. This place is now called Ape Canyon. The third and final sighting of 1924 also came from the same region of Mount St. Helens. A prospector said he has been woken in the middle of the night to the sounds of rocks being thrown at his cabin. When he looked outside, he saw Bigfoots and he says “they were screaming like a bunch of apes” (Krystel). The next day when he went outside, the found the cabin surrounded by big footprints.

During the early morning hours of January 8, 2008, a big-rig driver was hauling a load near the town of Scipio, just outside of St. George, Utah. As he downshifted and headed down the hill, the fog grew increasingly heavy and that is when he noticed something on the edge of the road with glowing eyes. He turned on his high beams and was frightened to see a gigantic creature running across the road just a couple meters or so away from the truck. He estimated the creature to be at least eight to ten feet tall and between six hundred and eight hundred pounds in weight. He describes the creature as having black hair and big eyebrows, with long, lanky arms that were much longer than a human’s. Even though this incident happened near the town of Scipio, the area the big rig-driver was driving in was a very wooded area. He was surrounded by trees, which makes it an easy and likeable place for creatures and animals to be around. Therefore, making it a little more dangerous and you are more likely to see unusual animals like Bigfoot. Also, as the fog grew thicker, it made it harder for the driver to see. Which undoubtedly, ended up scaring the driver even more when he did notice the creature standing near the road.
Around dusk on August 29, 2011, a woman was outside her newly bought house with her puppies when she heard a whistling sound coming from the woods. Normally, we would just assume that this whistling sound was coming from a bird singing. However, when one of her adult dogs parked toward the woods, she turned and saw a “tall hairy creature” (Animalplanet.com). She estimated the creature being eight to nine feet tall. Just like the previous incident mentioned, it was located near a wooded area. Therefore, making it a great hiding place for any creatures, especially Bigfoot. The creature was standing there, staring at the woman with her puppies. However, when the creature saw the woman, it let go of the tree branch and stepped back into the woods. That was the last time the creature was seen.
During the early morning hours on October 23, 2010, a deer hunter who was walking to his favorite clearing trying to not spook any deer, he noticed movement up in front of him.
When he got a little closer, he saw a very large animal who was covering an abnormally large amount of ground in a short amount of time. He describes the animal as to cover about fifteen to twenty feet in just two strides, while not running. The creature made absolutely no noticeable noise. He mentions what he saw was the creature standing seven to seven and a half feet tall and an estimated five hundred pounds in weight. He describes the creature as being muscular and covered with dark fur, with long arms and hunched over posture. The deer hunter states that the creature moved quickly down the hillside and was gone in just a few seconds. Like both of the above incidents, it happened in a wooded area which provides plenty of coverage for the
creatures. During the morning hours of a day in May, in the swamps of Florida was a fishing guide and his two clients on a flatboat in the mangrove swamp. While on their fishing trip, they spotted something about one hundred yards away. As the boat got closer, the creature turned and stood up and looked at them. The guide on the boat described the creature to be very wide with a muscular torso, big beard, and a hairless forehead. He mentions that the creature stared at them for fifteen seconds and then turned and walked away into the mangroves. Even though society views Bigfoot in many, many different ways. There are a few characteristics that are extremely similar including: the climate of the incident, how the creature acted when spotted, and what the creature appeared like to the witness. More times than not the witness would say that the creature was extremely tall, anywhere from seven to eleven feet tall. Also, that the creature was muscular and usually hairy. Sometimes the creature was hunched over more like an animal, other times it stood straight up like a human. However, the creature’s arms seemed to always be much longer than a human’s.
