According to Johnson (2008), there are five leadership models for leading change - Laissez-Faire, Autocratic, Participative, Transactional and Transformational. No single model is correct, however the participative or democratic model would be most effective in the public health sector. A stern leader is an unapproachable leader and it can affect how conflicts are resolved with subordinates. As a leader, it is important to promote teamwork, positive energy and motivation which can be obtained by developing rewards and recognition schemes throughout the company or organization.
An open door policy will aid in eliminating the unapproachable attribute. However this policy must be adhered to with respect, versatility and flexibility. Finally, it is imperative that one remains true, since the foundation for any relationship, both personal and professional, is honesty. In order to avoid the attributes mentioned above and optimize my potential as a public health leader, the following will be carefully employed.
Creating a personal and professional road map: this will be the guide to the policies that will be implemented to create an environment where everyone is comfortable, which will include weekly meetings and an open door policy
Reinforcing the goals and objectives of the organization will be a key component in the primary stages to avoid any potential issues.
