After reading the biography of Elon Musk, my dreams of becoming a professional athlete faded away. Growing up, like many young boys, I aspired to be an athlete. I had no preference of what sport that would be, I just knew that I wanted to feel the sensation of scoring a game winning goal or shooting a game winning basket. I constantly dreamt about being on a large athletic stage and performing a task that would set a crowd full of fans into a frenzy. The image of a soccer player kicking a game winning goal then looking out at thousands of people in a state of elation due to his action, would flash in my mind when I was playing the sport. The impact athletes have to alter the emotions of a crowd draws me to sports. However, reading about Musk and how he impacts…

There are two different types of opinions when it comes to the term “homework.” One of these opinions is that too much homework causes students to disengage. As most high school students say, “if you will regret not doing something for tomorrow, stay up late.” This is due to the innumerable amounts of students occupied by homework, an after-school job, or even extracurricular activities that take place each night. Teachers have noticed that their students are not participating in class and have lower grades, because they do not attain the recommended eight to ten hours of sleep needed to function every day (Source B). Teachers, parents, school administrators, and doctors have argued whether or not high schools should start classes after 8:30, instead of the normal time of 8:00 a.m.. Thus, raising the question, should high school start later?…

My junior year in high school I took two classes from teachers who gave immense amounts of work on difficult material. The classes were Honors Pre-Calculus and Advanced Biological Studies II. After a day at school and a demanding golf practice until dark, it was time to start my homework. By then I was already exhausted, but I still had hours of homework ahead of me. Most schools nights I would not be able to start my hefty pile of homework until 8 o'clock. Many nights the strenuous assignments given in Honors Pre-calculus and Advanced Biological Studies II kept me awake late into the night, even as late as 4 am. It was difficult struggling to stay awake and complete my strenuous workload after an entire day of activity. A full night of sleep…

Many students do extracurricular activities, and they devote a lot of time to these activities. However, as shown by both Alfie Kohn, a school principal, the current amount of homework assigned is enough so that the average student without extracurricular activities complain about being sleep deprived. Homework doesn’t leave any time for extracurricular activities. Kids who do extracurricular activities often devote more effort to those activities than homework. Of course, many adults will argue that if the kids can’t handle the work, they should quit the sport or class; school is more important. But this isn’t the case. The kids are right to take their sports more seriously than homework. In senior year of high school, when they apply for colleges, these activities will do more for them than a perfect track record with homework. Their special skills in sports will draw attention from recruiters after college. In the end, extracurricular activities will bring you farther than doing homework, but doing homework takes up the time needed for extracurricular…

The Education Research Center reported that 1.3 million students drop out every year. That is a shocking rate! Do not be a drop out. Do not be a slacker. Get your education and don’t be a part of the thousands of students who drop out everyday. Teachers all agree that students who come into class and slack off, don’t have a future ahead of them. Steve Jobs is an excellent example of how students can take control of their education before it is too late. Steve Jobs was a slacker himself when he was just in elementary school. His fourth grade teacher gave him the motivation he needed to take his education seriously, and eventually he became the honorable co-founder of a $2 billion company called Apple. Therefore, with motivation students can achieve so much.…

Middle and high schools around the nation are welcoming students in the morning at the average of 8:07 am, nearly 30 minutes earlier than recommended by health officials. Studies show that 20% of all students fall asleep during class on a regular basis, and a recent National Sleep Foundation study shows that only 15% of teens get the amount of sleep their brain needs. The reasons for such early start times include convenience for working parents, and daylight for extracurricular activities. Teenage brains develop a biological body clock, wiring them to wake up later in the morning. This gives an unfair disadvantage to the teen students in their early morning classes, when the brain is not fully functioning. A combination of extracurricular activities, homework, and the wiring of a teenager’s brain are also components to why teens tend to fall asleep later at night. Lack of sleep in teenagers greatly affect…

A common phrase among young adults in secondary education is that there are three parts to high school life: social life, grades, and sleep. Pick two. Clifton Parker, on a study by education scholar Denise Pope, states “spending too much time on homework mean[s] students [are] ‘not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,’” Students [are] more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family, and not pursue hobbies they enjoy.” To achieve grades that fulfill collegiate ambitions, students must spend all of the time they may spend with family or friends on the homework that earns them points. Teachers often assume that a student’s overall productivity is defined by the amount of work completed in a night. Many end up assigning at least an hour of homework to assure themselves that the kids are learning. Real life productivity is defined by advancement and development of character or leadership. Through that lens, completing busywork is not productive. Once students reach the real world, they are underprepared and underdeveloped to face day to day challenges. In an interview, Christine Gross-Loh quotes Krista Kuru, Finnish Education Chief, describing the reasoning against this approach. She states “Academics isn't all kids need. Kids need so much more. School should be where we teach the meaning of life; where kids learn they are needed; where they can learn community skills.…
