Starting school at a later time will make students more alert and awake. When teens get more sleep, they are more alert, resulting in an increase in academic performance and a decrease in tardiness, dropout rates, and absences. When teenagers hit puberty, there is a delay in the timing of their sleep. There are plenty of other things which can make it …show more content…
One of these being that students will have less time in the evenings to finish homework. If school starts later, that also means school will get out later. If school gets out later and students have sport practices/games or band practices/competitions after school, students may not have enough time to finish homework which is due the next day. Another con is that games for sports will end even later than they already do. Some teams have to travel to schools as far as an hour away. In almost all cases, students don’t get home till around ten or eleven at night, and even then they still have to get things ready for the next school day. This causes most students to not go to sleep till roughly an hour later than the time they arrived home. Lasty, if schools were to change their starting times, many students would be likely to take advantage of the extra “sleep in” hours, and they would stay up later. The students who have a high tendency to take advantage of these hours would be getting the equivalent amount of sleep that they are now, and the later starting times would not benefit them in any way, shape, or
