One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if …show more content…
we are practicing a sport, we will be more likely to get injured.
Getting done with school activities later into the evening also means that we will have less time to handle our other responsibilities which leads to the next reason a later start time is not a good idea. Getting done with after school activities later means we won’t be able to start our homework until later. This means we will be even more tired when we are trying to concentrate on our studies. Doing homework when we are exhausted means we won’t do thorough work and our grades will end up suffering. For many of us, if our grades suffer, we won’t be able to participate in after school activities which means we won’t have experience to show colleges and our GPA will be ruined from being too tired from trying to do everything later and later.
A later start time also means less quality sleep.
You might say, ‘You aren’t getting enough sleep because school starts too early.’ We aren’t getting enough sleep because we participate in extracurricular activities, we have homework, and if we are committed enough to what you are doing, no free time, no family time, and most of all we don’t have time to relax. We will be working right up until we go to bed, so we will go to bed stressed out and we won’t sleep well.
In conclusion, if the school start time is pushed back, our after school activities are pushed back, we will get home later and we will have less time to study and we will get less sleep. Starting school later in the morning does NOT give us more time to sleep. We will be forced to stay up later to study for the big test, to finish the project, and to do the thirty math problems we haven’t made a dent in yet because we haven’t had TIME. We will be waking up an hour earlier to finish homework we were too tired to get done the night before and we will end up getting less
sleep.
