Why We Should Start Later Essay
In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.

First is how it increases our whole ability to learn completely. Constant studies show that ”Insufficient sleep(less than 9.25 hours for a teen )results in poorer reaction time, vigilance, learning and alertness;”(Erde) this quote is very meaningful because these start times something so little may have a very large impact on our futures and our career just because it will make us more vigilant and we will be ready for more. The fact that the thing such as small as a later start time can improve our whole attitude and how we think is amazing and should be definitely be put to the test and tried.

Second, is how this later starting time will completely change their

Studies have shown that students on the later start time “ had better grades than students that started with a 7:15 a.m. start time”(Erde) This right here seals the deal and should automatically prove that we need to have these times in place and we need them quick for the betterment of our school and our future. And as parents this seems like an even better answer with a more happy kid that is doing better in school because of this change. We need to get out there and make a change in our society that benefits our kids and our future generations by raising the bar and with all of the negative things that go along with these early start times it will be hard to but with this change it will be even more doable and will be

Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

Did you ever take the time to think about if schools started later and how it would affect the students? It would affect the students in a big way. Students stay up late working on homework, then are tired when they have to wake up. "Teens need at least 8.5 hours of sleep daily, and most teens don't get that". Stated the author Justin Oneil in the scope article Should School Start Later School starting later would allow more time to sleep, witch leads to better grades, and students that function quicker and would have less work later. “42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

Many benefits would come from moving the start time to a later time. One issue with schools’ early start time is that students become sleep deprived. A teenages normal circadian sleep rhythm is they won’t fall asleep before 11 PM and they some have to be up by 5:00 or 6:00 AM to get ready and to be at school on time (npr). This is causing students to not get the healthy 8-10 hours of sleep that they need.…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…
