Have you ever wondered why you seem so tired day after day? Maybe it has something to do with the time that you wake up to get ready for school. It turns out that school start times are way too early for us to focus and be alert, and it could have some major consequences. Not only does waking up so early damage our health, restrict our ability to learn, and counter the capability to make good decisions, but it also impacts the lives of the people we know and love negatively.
If teens don’t get enough sleep, it could cause major health issues. The National Sleep Foundation says that on average, people under the age of eighteen are supposed to get around 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep but, with school starting so early, 2 out of every 3 students get less than seven hours of sleep. The Academy of American Pediatrics recommends that school should start at at least 8:30 in the morning. When compared to the average high school start time in NC, which is 7:10, doctors would find this very unhealthy. Many diseases are …show more content…
also spread throughout schools including strep throat and the flu. Many sleep disorders are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. For example, if a student started to show signs of narcolepsy and had to wake up to go to school there is a good chance said student did not get enough sleep and could doze of at the wheel, putting not only themselves in danger, but others as well. The National Sleep Foundation has also proved that because of students not getting a sufficient amount of sleep, they are more prone to alcohol and drug abuse. School starting later would allow students to be much happier and healthier.
Studies have shown that when children go to school later in the morning they perform better, are happier and are less stressed. When Wake County changed its starting times to later in the day, they noticed that their test scores went up, mostly for the more challenged kids. The U.S. Air Force conducted another experiment which showed that when kids start later than 8 a.m. they do better, not only in their first class, but for the rest of the day, too. Kids are more excited to learn when they are well-rested and happy. Not getting a good amount of sleep can result in limited thinking abilities and forgetting important things like names and problem solving methods. With school starting so early kids come to school exhausted, which doesn’t allow them to completely focus on the work they need to do.
When teenagers get enough sleep, it has been proven that they are prone to making better decisions than teenagers that don’t get enough sleep.
Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for
others.
The people that oppose our point of view mainly argue that the schedule of people who have after-school activities and of people with jobs that depend on the school schedule would be ruined. After-school activities could easily be solved because when the school switches its starting time, it would also change the time of things after school like sports, clubs, and tutoring. Also, as for work, they can arrange a carpool system with a group of family friends who would be able to bring them to and from the things that they are participating in. My friend is in scouts, but since he had a carpool system, he was able to go to all of his campouts and meetings without messing up anyone’s schedule, which shows that if it can work for my friend, it can work for anyone. So as for the opposition’s argument, there is no reason that any student’s schedule would be messed due to an earlier start to school.
As we stated before, school starting times should be later to improve the health of students in school, make learning easier and allow us to become better at decision making. Children are more prone to mental and physical disorders like narcolepsy, insomnia and depression when waking up as early as they are. They are also more likely to make more bad decisions like getting addicted to drugs and alcohol or committing serious crimes such as theft or even murder. Hopefully, we can end this cruel condition but we can’t do it without your help so, please talk to your principal about school starting later in the morning.
