A teenager wakes up at 9 am on a Saturday morning, having nothing to do all day. She grabs the TV remote and turns on her favorite show. Next thing she knows, it is 4 pm. Some may ask “How does this happen?” This occurs as a result of an addiction, known as binge- watching Binge watching is when someone watches episodes of a certain show, over and over again, without even knowing it. Binge watching can cause problems for both your mental, and physical health. Many people struggle with binge watching. Some triggers are the countdown timer, cliffhangers, online streaming companies and how they publish a whole season at once. Another trigger to binge watch is fomo. Fomo stands for fear of missing out. (Conlin). A lot of TV viewers experience this in a way that makes it sometimes uncontrollable. How they help to satisfy themselves is by binge watching, and making sure that they aren’t missing out on
This shows that many more people have access to binge watching. Also, might be headed in the direction of encountering the addiction. For example, the online streaming company, Cisco: “Cisco, a networking company, reckons nearly 1m minutes of video will cross the internet every second by 2018” (“Video in Demand”). As the years go by, the number of minutes of video is going to rapidly increase. As technology advances, so will the number and amount of people that have new technology. Many say that using an online streaming company to watch shows is much more efficient than waiting each week for a new show to come out and have “nothing” to do for the rest of the week. This is just this generation. This generation is so obsessed with online streaming, the big companies have gained thousands, if not. Millions of new audience. This proves that because more viewers and signed up for more online streaming companies, it means more people are accessible to binge
