Alex Bullock 9/13/2015 Selfiecity Paper “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media”, the definition of a selfie by Oxford Dictionary. In today's world, selfies are more of the social "norm" of telling everyone what you're doing, like at a restaurant before you get your food. A group of scientists decided to take the selfie to the next level and do research in 5 major cities, Bangkok, Berlin, New York, Sao Paolo and Moscow. They took all of their findings and compiled it into a website called “Selfiecity”. As well as talking about what a selfie is, she talks about how the selfie, or self-portrait, dates back to as early as the Renaissance. After, she gets into talking about the website itself and the group behind the site. “The Selfiecity project was created by a mostly male team…” and how the group behind the site collected over 600,000 Instagram pictures from 5 different major cities “Bangkok, Berlin, Moscow, New York, and Sao Paulo.” After collecting all of the data and sorting through it, they took 640 pictures from each city and that’s what they did all of their work on. After going through the pictures, they found that in each city, there were more female selfies than there was male selfies, and then take it even further and break it down into the age of the person, gender, their pose, their mouth (open or closed), if they were wearing glasses, their mood, or if their eyes were opened or

    For an audience to react positively to an argument they must have faith that the author is competent on the subject so Ryan knew that she needed to prove this. She chose to speak on a similar level as one would in a conversation with a close friend using “I”, “They”, and “you” to assist in accomplishing this. Ryan’s use of first person perspective makes her argument feel more personal. An example; “I've posted selfies to Facebook, and Twitter. I always feel bad about it; it always takes several tries to not look stupid, and even now, I kind of hate all of them.” (para.7) Here she shows that she can relate to those who take selfies and has a personal understanding of selfies affect. However, Ryan’s attempt to gain authority through anecdotes is only convincing enough for those who already agree with her on the subject. Another strategy Ryan uses is to make herself relatable to the intended audience is their similar gender. Clearly she establishes this because she rarely referred to men as being victims of the need for affirmation through selfies in her article. She had to establish this connection with the audience so they will be more empathic towards her argument. She demonstrates further relatability with the audience when using “we” and “Me N DFW 4 eva! XOXO #blessed #reading #smart #rip” (para. 4) showing she is involved in social media and is actively aware of what is popular on it further establishing relatability to the audience. To gain the support of another group of women she effectively pushes the emotional downside to selfies by associating them with degrading practices with women.
