I was standing in the center of a boisterous, chanting crowd. People were marching, waving their banners and posters in the air. Compelling images filled the air as voices through the microphones boomed with motivating speeches. Everybody there had some motivation, a passion to create change. Most importantly, the crowd consisted of people of all races, all ethnicities, and all professions. Whether it was the families of those who lost lives speaking through the microphones or the supporters rallying in the crowd, we were all there for one reason. This was a Black Lives Matter protest before #blacklivesmatter was a hashtag.
I was there to challenge police brutality and racial profiling. I was not just there to challenge an idea, I was there to create a difference, and I acted on my own ideas. By attending the protest, I was able to voice my opinions, while doing so in a peaceful way. What prompted me to act was the unfairness and inhumanity of this idea. The problem of police brutality and racial profiling has never impacted me personally, however it impacts the lives of so many people around us. I am sure everybody has heard of the incidents occurring on the news or other media, known victims personally or even witnessed the events. However only a few people become motivated enough to step out and stand up for what they believe
in.
Although I refuse to silence my own voice, I also know the importance of listening to the voices of people around me. In this case, the voices of police who protect us while they are on the front-line of the most dangerous situations. The corruptness of a few policemen should not taint all of them. That is what this protest taught me. Not only did I voice my opinion and act on my beliefs, I witnessed the other side of the story. I witnessed policemen rallying with us.
