Just an advertisement, or something deeper? When one stares at a Smirnoff vodka ad, the purpose of the ad almost seems to obvious. One would think that the sole purpose of the ad would be to sell their alcohol, but well designed advertisements contain much more thought and meaning than meets the eye. A more specific example of this phenomenon is a Smirnoff vodka ad for their fairly new green apple flavored vodka. This particular ad conveys a hidden argument that Smirnoff green apple can offer something more to drinkers than just alcohol, and this is done through signs and emotional appeals. At first glance the ad shows a well dressed man and woman sitting on a park bench in what looks like a park or even a garden. The man on the bench seems to be sleeping while the woman who appears to be his date is kissing a cupid like man floating above the bench. Also in the picture, is an apple tree that shades the bench that the couple is sitting on. Coincidentally, the tree also happens to be growing shiny, neon green apples to represent the flavor of the beverage. The colors used in the ad range drastically, but there is a common theme in regards to color. All of the background and foreground colors are bright and some are even neon, such as the green apples on the tree and flowers littering the outskirts of the ad. In regards to text on the advertisement the bottom reads “Old Story New Twist” next to the Smirnoff logo and an apple. With all of the obvious elements pointed out, the overall message of the ad is still unclear, but that is the intention of the ad. To uncover the main intentions of the ad one must first recognize the more hidden references and arguments within the ad. The first of which is the hidden biblical reference that the scene is occurring in the Garden of Eden and alludes to the story of Adam and Eve. As supporting evidence to this the ad also contains the apples that represent the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve eat from the biblical story.

The tone used to convey the message is a very serious one, as made evident by the stern expression on the male modeling for the picture, as well as the lack of color. The image does not ask any questions, instead choosing to instill its message with facts and a command, relying on the viewer to both use their logic to think about how their actions could impact others, and to listen to the advice given by the ad which comes from a trusted source. Through this analysis, one can gather that the advertisers are using logos and ethos to appeal to the viewer. When all this is considered, the message given through the straight, black and white font has a deeper impact,…

The economy is based on consumption and advertising is an indispensable motivator that persuades people to consume. Advertising is one of the biggest tools companies use to sell a product. Today if a product is not actively marketing, publicizing, or advertising itself the product will fail. It is essential for an advertisement to use rhetorical appeals to grab the viewer’s attention. Advertising can be so good that it can sell things to people using a picture alone. It is all in the eye of the beholder. So when I was flipping through the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine I stumble across an ad for ZzzQuil an - over - the counter sleeping aid. It was towards the middle of the magazine and it popped out like a huge billboard. The ad captures attention because the picture of the women sleeping looks so comfortable and makes peaceful sleep desirable and attainable. The ad shows a woman in her bedroom with her striped bedding sleeping in what appears to be a very deep sleep. She is lying face down, eyes shut, with mouth wide open in her bed with her curly hair pressed against the pillow and her arm dangling off the side of the bed. She is sleeping in her bed with a big caption saying “Because sleep is a beautiful thing” (“ZzzQuil”). The ad has amazing appeal and is a great attention grabber. The target audience is clear and defined and all three appeals are used well. The ZzzQuil advertisement is targeting women and they are using all three rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, and logos to sell this product.…

An advertisement is something such as a short film or a written notice shown or presented to the public in order to help sell a product. Jib Fowles, a professor from the University of Houston, wrote an article describing the emotional appeals of an advertisement. According to Fowles, “The continuous pressure is to create ads more and more in the image of audience motives and desires” (Fowles 33). The goal of the advertisements is to relate to the needs and desires of the audience. Although the Kindle ad and the Energizer ad both have relatable pictures, they have different appeals: The kindle ad uses appeals to the need to escape and the need to satisfy curiosity because it targets young adventurous people, while the Energizer headlight ad…

The modern Marine NCO is the embodiment of the Corp’s history and traditions because we are the back bone of the Marine Corps. We are the small unit leaders and through our strive, motivation and dedication, I believe its our duty to pass on the knowledge to our junior Marines as many other NCO’s have and are doing today. We do this by carrying the tradition of making sure the the history and traditions are still being remembered and enforced by taking the initiative and time to learn about our history and traditions first; if we know nothing or very little about our traditions and history, we would not be able to pass on any knowledge. As an NCO you are the first “teacher”, mentor, and example to junior Marines. It all starts from the first day you take Marines under your charge; the way you act around your Marines, when showing common courtesies is another way we keep our traditions going. Lastly, the modern NCO’s are taught to follow the traditions and history of the past and; therefore, we have to continue to do the same. In the following I will further explain in greater detail about why I chose these reasons.…

Advertisements have become a big part of our daily life, and we see them wherever we go from walking in the city or to driving on the highway. Some of these advertisements put a spin on something old such as an image or phrase, and it will catch peoples eyes. This is just what Guinness did with one of their beer ads that reads “Enjoy responsibly. Phones down, please.” The layout and color of the phones on the bar counter are put in that spot to make a glass shape, The company shows all three different appeals mostly trying to persuade buyers. Guinness has made an ad that puts a twist on everyday objects and phrases, uses colors of phones to create an image, and uses appeals to persuade people into getting a stout.…

The advertisement has a very good focal point. When first viewing the advertisement, you are immediately drawn to the photo of the man standing on top of the skyscraper. This photo supports the key message of the ad: that your business can stand out in Rancho Cucamonga. The ad is mostly readable. The color scheme of the ad provides good contrast between the text and the background. For example, the lavender text of the message of the ad can be easily seen on the blue background of the photo. The ad also exhibits good symmetry. The top of the ad focuses on grabbing the reader’s attention, while the bottom of the ad tries to persuade the reader using detailed proof. This use of symmetry also makes the ad look well organized. The preferred audience, corporations looking to relocate, may be more drawn to the ad due to its organization.…

The words and colors that are in the ad make you think of a horror movie. The writing of the frozen meat is in red, dripping like blood running down. The text says, “Sounds like something out of a horror movie.” That statement is there to make sure that if you don’t get the point that they are trying to make from the picture, the words should let you know their intention. The color of the sky is orange, which is the color of Halloween. The clouds…
