In the novel Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio has many dreams but there is on dream that changes him completely. The author of Bless Me Ultima is Rudolfo Anaya. In this dream Antonio watched all of the people he cared about die and experiences the presence of the three men that are an important part of his life.
Tony sees three figures standing in front of him but he is unsure of who they are until they finally reveal themselves. “This is the boy who heard our last confession on earth…” (243). At first Tony thinks he is looking at his brothers but then he realizes they are Lupito, Narciso, and Florence. He sees them standing there and staring right into his eyes. He can tell it’s them by what they just said. “These are the men I have seen die! I cried. Who else will my prayers accompany to the land of death?” (243). Antonio is hurt because he is looking at the three most important people that passed away in front of him. He feels hurt by what he is seeing and hearing. Tony is depressed by the loss of his mentors.
In three middle part of this dream he sees two of his most trusted Gods being destroyed. “…the priest desecrated the altar by pouring the blood of dead pigeons into the holy chalice. The old gods are dying, he laughed.” (244). In this part the priest is pouting blood instead of the traditional wine while laughing at God. Tony is surprised to see the priest kill God. “When the Golden Carp appeared Cico struck with his spear and the water ran blood red.” (244). Another God that Tony believes in died because Cico kills him with his spear. He is mesmerized when he sees Cico kill the golden carp because Cico also believes in it. He experiences his Gods being murdered by his closest friends.
The dream ends with another mentor of Tony passing away. “…Tenorio captured the night-spirit of Ultima and murdered it…” (244). Basically Tenorio murders Ultima because he despises her for killing his

In the context of Activation Synthesis theory, Calpurnia and Brutus’ dreams have no meaning to it. The dreams are simply random impulses of them dealing with their emotions of the current situations. In Calpurnia's case, she’s dealing with her gut-feeling and her displeasure of ceremonies. “Caesar I never stood for ceremonies, yet now they frighten me.” (II.ii. 13-14). With Brutus he’s dealing with the emotional charge of the mobs, and the war, along with his moral dilemma of whether killing Caesar was the right thing to…

Blood becomes the river. The human race dies and only the "she-goats and the he-goats" remain (176). The lake "cracked with laughter of madness" and the "ghosts stood and walked upon the shore" (120). Who dares dream such gruesome images? Only Antonio Marez. He argues with God and the Virgin Mary. He commutes with the dead; the dead asks him for blessings. Just who is this Tony person! You might not believe that this is only a seven year old kid, but he is the hero of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Tony is valiant, and this courage sometimes reflects his curiously precocious nature. Precocious he is, he still is in constant mental ambivalence.

When I say Tony is brave, I don't mean that he fights demons or kill dragons, but rather that he stands for what he believe is right and he is not afraid to go to extreme measures to protect the people he love. He shows that he is a "man of the llano" when he "does[n't] run from a fight" even when confronted with Horse, the notorious bully (37). Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255). At trying times, he "stood by Ultima" and "would have slashed out to protect Ultima" (138).

Oftentimes, Tony's…

In the first dream, the woman, who turns out to be Ultima, buried Antonio’s afterlife. This foreshadows Antonio’s true identity being revealed by Ultima right before her death, as she asks Antonio to follow in her footsteps. In another dream Antonio hears his brothers in the woods saying, “ Oh our sweet baby, we are coming home to you. We who had been beyond the land of our father’s dream; we who have traveled west until we were in the east, we are coming home to you” (61). This foreshadows the return of his three older brothers from the war. But yet in another dream of Antonio’s, when the three older brothers cannot cross the river, it foreshadows that once they return from the war they will leave…

As Tony witnesses Ultima work near impossible miracles, he cannot seem to understand how any one person can surpass God’s power. While helping Ultima cure his sick Uncle, Tony is baffled by Ultima's healing abilities. He ponders how “the magic of Ultima [cwould] be stronger than all the powers of the saints and the Holy Mother Church?" (97). Tony feels a deeper and even spiritual connection to his uncle while Ultima is curing him. Although this is not addressed in the novel, this could be Ultima’s or even the spirits attempting to guide Tony in the directions of possibly becoming a curandera. In addition to Ultima, the sheer existence of the golden carp deters Tony from his originally chosen path. After hearing the story of the golden carp, he gets caught in the magic of such an ostensibly perfect immortal figure. Tony’s simple idea of “a god who [could]... [forgive]” (137) and guide him further exacerbates his inner conflict. It i’s very easy for a child as young as Tony to be tempted by the immaculate identities of such characters. Tony’s desperate cries for a role model with whom he wishes to emulate are now being directed at anybody willing to help him untangle his indoctrinated values from the mysterious and new beliefs he stumbles…
