Narciso and Gabriel’s failed attempt to save Lupito, as well as the triumph of Chavez’s and the others’ blind anger and fear, forces Antonio to confront the fact that good intentions and good actions do not always achieve their desired results. As Antonio’s mentor, Ultima does not tell him what to think; rather, she tells him how people like his father and Narciso make moral decisions. Her approach gives Antonio the freedom to apply his understanding to his own decisions. Ultima’s style of teaching implies that she is more interested in helping Antonio develop into an independent person than in teaching him any particular moral outlook on…

“From my father and Ultima I had learned that the greater immortality is the freedom of man, and that freedom is best nourished by the noble expanse of land and air and pure, white sky” (Anaya, 228). Tony’s father then talks about the land possessing “a power that can fill a man with satisfaction” (Anaya, 229). Ultima adds on about the land giving faith for nature to grow and evolve. This means that with freedom and faith, you can evolve and grow. Consequently, Antonio comes to the realization that even though nature had a dark, mystical past, nature evolved and grew with faith and freedom.…

This was due to the struggles their parents had spoke a different language in society. Amy Tan states,“As a child Tan thinks of her mom as not as intelligent because of her “broken” English. “I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s ‘limited’ English, limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is, because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect.” This means that Amy Tan was ashamed that her mother couldn't speak the same language as society spoke, so she gave her mother a different identity. Similar to Amy Tan, Richard Rodriguez also wrote about how he was embarrassed with his parents language. He states, “And yet, in another way, it mattered very much – it was unsettling to hear my parents struggled with English. Hearing them, I’d grow nervous, my clutching trust in their protection and power weakened.” Rodriguez’s embarrassment of his parent’s inability to speak English supported by society’s impacted his family. Both Tan and Rodriguez at an early age struggle with how they viewed their parent’s identity which made them work hard to shape their own…

I think when Rodriguez’s said it didn’t matter to him he meant socially because his parents didn’t speak English that great but they were able to speak it to the attend of people understanding them and getting things done. It mattered to Rodriguez a lot emotionally because when you are young you look up to your parents to protect you and guide you and since they didn’t understand English that great it was hard for them to guide Rodriguez and it made him doubt his parents.…

This film represents realism because in life, there are bad situations that there is nothing you can do about. I thought it was unfair that Antonio had been the one to get his bike stolen and not many people had helped him capture the thief, unlike where at the end the man who Antonio tried to steal from had gotten a lot of help. But that is to go without saying that the term “life is unfair” is put literal. Although I had felt sympathetic towards Antonio most of the film, it really phased me when he tried stealing another man’s bicycle because it seemed he reached a point that had been unnecessary to do. As soon as I saw this happen, my sympathy left for Antonio and it turned into more of a disappointed feeling because Antonio had reached a new point of desperation that was not an example to be given to his son, Bruno. The film was portrayed realistically because life has many bad moments and unfair obstacles that drive you to be another person.…

The novel goes on detailing the abuses of the military and the church by curtailing the education of the masses so they would remain illiterate and not able to mount a revolution (ironic since the revolution that toppled the Spanish regime came from the masses led by Andres Bonifacio). Though Antonio is a passive figure we can say that the play is rightly named after him. It was Antonio's action that gave rise to the plot of the drama and indirectly he is related to the casket story, the second main plot of the drama. The bond story rises directly out of his execution of the bond. The casket story is indirectly but vitally related to him as he is the person who enters into the bond, borrows money from Shylock and helps Bassanio to reach Belmont as a suitor. In the final scene the battle…
