Blithe Spirit Analysis

The production of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward was performed by The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film and directed by Virginia Smith. I attended the performance on March 2nd, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Overall, I thought this play was very interesting and kept me intrigued the whole time. I would say that I don’t really have a type of production that I would attend, but now seeing this production I would most likely go see it again to see how other organizations would vary it. Every performer that was in this production I thought had done a very good job of acting. However, I am going to focus on Ruth Condomine and Madame Arcati. Ruth was Charles Condomine’s second wife and loved to have a good time by stirring up past circumstances. I thought
Madame Aracati was the medium that the Condomine’s had called to their house so that they could have a little fun with making fun of Madame Arcati’s craziness. This performer had some of the best gestures I have ever seen in a performance. Whenever she would do her séances, where she would move around and do many exaggerated movements made her very believable that she was a medium that felt very in touch with the spirits. Her overall energy made the production very enjoyable. She was very good at keeping her accent the whole time, but there were times I felt that she was talking fast so it became a little hard to understand during those times. All of the craziness and energy she supplied, especially riding a bike for a short seven miles, made her very believable that she was a medium that was very into her work and excited about this extraordinary event that was taking
In fact, I wanted every single pair of Ruth’s shoes. I especially loved her gray cutout heels that she wore with her ghost costume. All of the outfits fit very well into the time period and all were very classy looking which definitely gave the impression of them all being wealthy. However, Madame Arcati did not fit in with all the other styles, but right when I saw her, I knew she was going to have some quirks to her because of the way that she was dressed. The costumes all conveyed as well that this took place in the summer because they were all very lively colors and breathable clothing. Each costume portrayed each character’s personality very well by matching their personality, whether they were quirky or very wise and professional. The ghosts were also conveyed very well because they looked like actual spirits and were wearing more flowing clothing to portray that they were just a fog floating
