Specific goal: To explain the process of donating blood
Thesis Statement: I am going to be talking about the steps for donating blood, including the preparation, the drawing of blood, the recovery process, and what is done with the blood afterwards.
Introduction:
1. As stated in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary in 2004, “blood is the fluid that circulates in the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins of a vertebrate animal carrying nourishment and oxygen to and bringing away waste products from all parts of the body”
2. That’s a dry definition for the wet red substance that sustains our lives.
3. Everyone needs it to survive. That is why I’m going to be talking about the steps for donating blood, including the preparation, the drawing of blood, the recovery process, and what is done with the blood afterwards.
Body:
I. Preparing for Donation
A. Eat a good breakfast
A.1. You want to eat iron-rich foods such as eggs or red meats because donating blood lowers your iron levels when it is drawn.
A.2. Avoid foods that are high in fat. If your blood has a lot of fat in it, it cannot be tested for infections and therefore is useless for the blood bank.
A.3. Eating a large breakfast decreases your chance of feeling shaky, weak, and your chances of fainting.
B. Drink A LOT of Water
B.1. Removing blood decreases the amount of fluid in your body
B.2. As recommended by the American Red Cross in an article published in October of 2012 titled “Tips for a Successful Donation,” drink at least 10 cups of water the day before donating blood.
B.3. Having an abundant amount of water in your system prior to donating blood will also decrease your chance of fainting because it keeps your blood pressure from dropping.
B.4. Avoid drinking carbonated/alcoholic beverages.
