HISTORY
Blueville Nursery was started in 1933 by Marlin and Gladys Scott on Blueline Road in Manhattan Kansas. The couple owned and operated it until 1962 at which time they sold the company to Darrell and Dorothy Westervelt. In 1969, Darrell and Dorothy moved the company to its present location which is at the corner of Anderson Avenue and Scenic drive in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1963 this location was started as Blueville’s growing fields and they opened a small garden store in 1970 which is now the area of the current employee parking lot.
The nursery incorporated in 1972 in order to allow employees to become part owners in the company. In December 1998, Keith Westervelt was elected as the President and CEO of Blueville Nursery and Darrell Westervelt, who was the previous President and CEO, remained with the company and spends his time doing research and development. The ownership includes many employees to include Keith who retains 51 percent of the stock. The stocks are only available to employees and only offered by the approval of the stockholder board members. There are currently 16 stock holders currently and this number is kept low in order to promote longevity in the company as an added incentive for the senior employees.
The nursery is located on about 45 acres of which about 30 acres are dedicated to growing trees, evergreens, shrubs, and sod. These plants are grown mostly for the landscaping department as well as for the Garden store. In 1991 Blueville built a new landscaping office as well as several warehouses and some bulk material storage bins. In 1992, it built the new garden store at its present location and has since added several landscape designs to it as show pieces. It built a running waterfall area, a picnic
