Before the trial, Bob wasn’t really acknowledged in the book. During the trial, Bob was affected by the way Atticus would connect with him and ask him questions. Bob acted very uneducated and was disrespectful during the trial in the courtroom. He would take offense to the majority of the things Atticus would say to him, even though Atticus did not intend any offense. After the trial, Bob Ewell spit in Atticus’ face. Atticus was sympathetic to why Bob would react in such a way. “Jem, see if you can stand in Bob Ewell's shoes a minute. I destroyed his last shred of credibility at that trial, if he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of comeback, he kind of always does. So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take,” Harper Lee wrote. In other words, Atticus would prefer that Bob would take his anger out on him than on Mayella and her siblings. After a while, Bob reacts violently again, but this time on Scout and Jem are fortunately saved by Arthur “Boo” Radley after suffering some injuries. Bob Ewell dies at the scene with a knife would in his…

Bob Ewell is thought of as the most despicable man in all of Maycomb, except for its black residents, who the racists of the town think are worse than anyone else. Bob Ewell is one of these racists, and throughout the novel he shows that he thinks himself better than any black man. He shows his racist attitude many times at his trial. For example Bob Ewell does not refer to Tom Robinson by his name, instead he states "I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella!". In addition to not calling him by name; he also uses language associated with animals, “ruttin” as well as later saying “I've asked this county for fifteen years to clean out that nest down yon- der, they're dangerous to live around 'sides devaluin' my property-". In the previous quote Bob Ewell also shows he believes in the stereotype that all black men are criminals, and states his belief that they are devaluing his property more than the nearby dump. Finally, he tells Atticus “ I'm real sorry they picked you to defend that nigger that raped my Mayella. I don't know why I didn't kill him myself instead of goin' to the sheriff. That would have saved you and the sheriff and the taxpayers lots of trouble.”. He shows his racism here in that he believes that the law would be on his side against a black man no matter what happend, even if he had killed Tom.…

Harper Lee portrayed Atticus as a very courageous man. Atticus is courageous because he takes up a case no one else dares to take, the Tom Robinson case. He was willing to risk his honour and dignity to help the poorly accused black man. Although he gets a lot of abuse from various people, for example Mrs Dubose when she says, “Atticus is a nigger-lover”, he still doesn’t step down from the case and ignores people. He even put his Children in the way when Scout nearly gets in to a fight against Cecil Jacobs when Cecil Jacobs says that “Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers”. Scout even takes abuse from her own family when her cousin, Francis, says that Atticus is a “nigger-lover” which really puts Scout on edge and she starts a fight with Francis.…

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee took the world by storm in 1960s with a story about southern racism and discrimination. Although the novel focused on small town life in southern Alabama, it influenced the future and success of the Civil Rights Movement. Harper Lee wrote this novel in a childs point of view at the beginning of the Civil Rights Era when events such as the murder of Emmett Till, the lunch counter sit-ins, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott put Alabama at the center of the movement. Throughout this era there was a great deal of racial discrimination and the expectation that no one would try to argue with the whites assumed authority. In Lees book, the focus is centered on the conviction of Tom Robinson, a poor black man. He was convicted of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a notoriously poor white family in a small town called Maycomb. The protagonists father, Atticus, took on the case but only did so because otherwise, I couldnt hold up my head in town, I couldnt represent this county in the legislature, and I couldnt even tell you or Jem not to do something again. Atticus also struggled with the fact that he had no hope of winning due to the race of his client. Ts morbid, watching a poor devil on trial for his life. Look at all those folks, its like a Roman carnival. At the end of the trial, Tom was convicted and sentenced to death, despite undeniable evidence that he was innocent. These results shocked readers and reminded many of the Scottsboro trials and how unfair they were. In addition, the childs point of view on To Kill a Mockingbird allowed many white southerners to question the way the system was if even a child could point out its flaws. After these realizations, the famous novel was quickly made into a movie, expanding its audience even further. After the movies big debut, several significant events occurred, which shaped the Civil Rights Movement and America as we know it today. For example, within a few years,…
