He felt sorry for Mayella because she was lonely and had no one to help her. Another time Tom shows selflessness is when he describes how he helped Mayella, “She gave me the hatchet and I broke up the chiffarobe”. (Lee 191) Tom took time out of his day to help Mayella cut up the chiffarobe. It doesn’t matter that he is black and she is white, he is the good guy because he helps her and feels sorry for her. The following characteristic for Tom is he is hardworking.
Tom is shown to be hard working when Link Deas said “I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a speck o’trouble outa him. Not a speck.” (Lee 195) Link Deas informs the court room that Tom is hardworking and never has been a problem for him.He stands up for Tom because he knows he would never do what he is being accused of. This shows that a white man is allowed to stand up for a black man without any prejudice against him. The final characteristic that describes Tomis honesty. There are many times in chapter nineteen that Tom is truthful. His entire testimony is the truth and why would he lie about something so serious when he is a selfless man. For example in his testimony “You say you had to pass the Ewell place to get to and from work. Is there any other way to go? “No suh, none’s that I know of.” (Lee 191) Back then there was a lot of prejudice between blacks and white for instance if a black many was accused of something he would be sent to jail or killed. While a white man would simply get a slap on the wrist and told do not do it again. To Kill a Mockingbird is now my favorite book and I believe everyone would like it if they gave it a
chance.
