When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Most women with negative body images would answer no, and they are not alone. Body image refers to how someone feels about his or her own physical appearance. Women in the U.S. and throughout the world are under pressure to measure up to a certain social and cultural ideal of beauty, which can lead to poor body image. Society's hard sell on human perfection can be difficult to avoid, especially for teenage girls. As a result, poor body image can result through the influence media sources has on teenagers.
B. When a poor body image is developed, the obsession to achieve the desired look could bring many fatal consequences.
1. According to a study in Brown Medical School, adolescents with negative body image concerns are more likely to be depressed, anxious, and suicidal than those without intense dissatisfaction over their appearance. 2. A serious form of body image disturbance could result in Body Dysmorphic Disorder, which is a chronic mental illness in which you can't stop thinking about a flaw with your appearance — a flaw either that is minor or that you imagine.
C. Learning to accept ourselves and loving what is seeing in the mirror could be great ways to improve a distorted body image. 1. Regular exercise has been shown to boost self-esteem, self-image, and energy levels. 2. If there are things about yourself that you want to change and can, do this by making goals for yourself. 3.
