Book Report For The Great Gatsby

The book, The Great Gatsby, is a book based back in the 1920’s. The main characters of The Great Gatsby were Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Fay Buchanan, Thomas “Tom” Buchanan, Jordan Baker, George B. Wilson, Myrtle Wilson, and Meyer Wolfshiem. Nick Carraway is provided as a first-person narrator in the book. In the very beginning of the story Nick moves from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, striving to become a versatile man. Nick has a cousin in Long Island named Daisy that is married to a man named Tom. Nick moves into his house, which is beside a gentleman by the name of Jay Gatsby. Nick realizes that Jay is a young millionaire and often tends to hold conversations with Jay throughout the story. Although this isn’t acknowledged towards the beginning of the story, Jay Gatsby has some very shady business hookups which is how he acquired his currency. Jay Gatsby is obsessed with Nick’s cousin, Daisy, and often tends to throw many parties throughout the story to try and impress Daisy but he fails. The story is based off of how Nick deciphers Jay Gatsby’s life and you could make the assumption that he tries to be like Gatsby. The story shows how Nick lays out Jay’s life which shows he came from rags to riches. He may not have
done it in the most legal way, but he still did it. Jay and Daisy were together before Daisy married Tom, but Jay was sent off to war and Daisy promised Jay that she would wait for him. But during the time period of the war going on Daisy met Tom and fell for him, she couldn’t wait for Jay so she married Tom. Jay comes home after the war to see that Daisy is married to Tom and detects that they now have a child together so he knows his chances of getting back with Daisy are shot. Yet he still does everything to try and impress her into coming back to him, but he fails many times and slowly starts to give up. Tom is married to Daisy but also has a lady on the side that even Daisy knows about. I’m not sure if you would say that Tom is cheating on Daisy since Daisy knows about his lady on the side. Tom and Daisy have a baby together that in the beginning of the story Nick is excited to see. Tom and Daisy’s baby is named Pammy, and she plays a small part in the story. Daisy says in the story that she wants Pammy to grow to be a young woman and a fool, because that’s how all women should be. This could question Daisy’s stableness as a mother because of how fragile she is as a person. Tom’s side ladies name is Myrtle Wilson, whose husband is George Wilson.
George is the owner of an old run down auto shop at the edge of the valley of ashes. George has no clue about the affair going on between Myrtle and Tom, but when he does he is devastated. George loved and idolized Myrtle throughout the story until he hears of the affair going on between both Tom and Myrtle. Before Tom and Myrtle’s affair is found out by the public, Tom does everything in his power to keep it quiet. He even goes to the degree of making Myrtle take a different car or different train to go out to dinner and such. In the beginning of the story Tom is eager to take Nick to meet Myrtle, but Nick doesn’t know that the lady is Myrtle until he meets
her. Supervenient in the story Tom starts to see Daisy’s love for Jay come back into play, Tom had no clue about Jay and Daisy being together before the war. Tom after a while gets Daisy to confess that she loves Jay, then Tom sends Daisy off with Jay in condescension. While Tom is driving home from the city after his confrontation with Jay, Tom and Nick and Jordan come upon an accident. Within the accident Myrtle Wilson is killed, Tom believes that this is Jay Gatsby’s fault so he goes after Gatsby. After a little bit Myrtle Wilson’s husband George is notified of the news and is devastated.
