Book Review on Franklin D. Roosevelt Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. While being president he was trying to lead our country through a time of economic depression and total war. Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the most important leaders of the 20th century. Alan Brinkley, the author of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, wrote this biography in order to show Roosevelt’s life from childhood to presidency and all the trials and tribulations that occurred. Brinkley wrote this book to be able to show Roosevelt’s life from when he was born to him leading our country through the war. Not only just showing what happened in his life but also being able to show what he had to go through and what kind of decisions he had to make when running this country. This book was a great way to teach an audience about Roosevelt and was very effective in getting the point across. Brinkley used an immense amount of sources to be able to write this book. He used anywhere from other biographies to memoirs and diaries of the people who served with Roosevelt. He was not writing this book in order to criticize what all Roosevelt did wrong, but to show the magnitude and importance of everything he did right, such as the reshaping of American Government to the successful leadership of the United States. The New York Times wrote the day after Roosevelt died, “It will honor him above all else because he had the vision to see clearly the supreme crisis of our times and the courage to meet that crisis boldly. Men will thank God on their knees, a hundred years from now, that Franklin D. Roosevelt was in the White House” (99). This shows that not only was Franklin D. Roosevelt a great man he was also a great leader of our country. Brinkley did an amazing job with being able to show all of Roosevelt’s accomplishes and all the trials and tribulations he overcame during presidency and also during his

Franklin Delano Roosevelt is easily the best president of his era. He had the single best approach to the economic problems and social problems that followed the economic problems of the time. Many people would say that he couldn’t make decisions for himself because of how he was constantly changing his ideas but in truth, his plan was to do whatever it took to work and he was going to make something work. In case it was not known, FDR was a fighter. He never gave up on the USA or stepped down even after being stricken by polio. A lot of his ideas came from his “brain trust” which was comprised of many advisors of all different back rounds and political beliefs. He was constantly keeping the American people informed with the state of the government and economy through a new invention popularly known as the radio. He would go out of his way to help the banks and would do anything to dig the US out of the pit that Hoover had dug and did nothing really to dig them out other than laying the foundation for FDR to bring America back from the brink of complete collapse. Using the foundation laid by Hoover many Administrations, Acts, and even some Corporations were put in place and somewhere welcomed and others weren’t, but FDR took all of the success and failures and made sure it worked out for the American people and the world when WWII came around. His foreign policy in WWII was very much respected and still is today because FDR would not let the crimes of others go unpunished. All in all everything FDR did was for the best of this country and the way he handled WWII both domestically and overseas.…

Teddy Roosevelt made so many advances. He would later be the inspiration of Franklin D. Roosevelt who took similar stances on many topics. Besides his inspiration, Roosevelt accomplished many things in office. .Roosevelt would be one of the most involved presidents of the time. “Most presidents had outlined their goals…Roosevelt sent drafts of legislation to Congress and actively lobbied on behalf of that legislation.”(139). He was also known to feed the media stories that benefited his self-image. In many ways, Roosevelt was a man of firsts. He was first to “ride in an automobile, fly in an airplane, and be submerged in a submarine.” (139). Roosevelt directly contrasted McKinley, Roosevelts social agenda included “regulation of the railroads [and] increased federal power to regulate commerce…”(142) Roosevelt also used his power to set aside large portions of natural forest for the benefit of future generations. Roosevelt also facilitated the production of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt’s famous quote regarding his opinion of foreign policy is to “Speak softly and carry a big stick…” The president was strongly in favor of a larger federal government. Roosevelt “helped the nation make the transition from a rural republic to a world power” (146) Thus, his significance can forever be shown with his face carved into the side of Mount Rushmore. Roosevelt’s significance is much more focused due to the actuality of it. A decent amount of McKinley’s significance lays in potential. What changes could he have made? That is unknown. The unknown and known have equal significance. It is a tragedy that the United States never got to fully experience President McKinley’s significance. Some events are so reliant on time and place and amazing things happen. The same happens with horrible events. Both have value. Without the wrong doings of the past, the United States could not be…
