Ralph is introduced as being 'the boy with fair hair' (pg 7). One of the first things Ralph does is pull up his sock which symbolizes the idea that Ralph is still civilized and acts like he is still in a sophisticated society. Ralphs father was in the army, and made it a point to say that his father was going to rescue them. When Ralph was elected as chief, it was because he was oldest, and was said to have the physique of a boxer ‘he may make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil’ (pg 10).…

Carol Off’s book Bitter Chocolate is similar to her other written works. Off’s novels usually expose a political issue involving inequality. In her excerpt from Bitter Chocolate, titled “Cocoa on Trial”, Off exploits the inequalities inside the chocolate industry. Even after the slave trade laws have been abolished people were experiencing horrendous conditions. From Angola to the cocoa plants in Sao Tome, Africans were treated like slaves. The main idea of this chapter revolves around big cocoa businesses and moral disengagement. These businesses do not care about the well-being of others, but more about their costs and profits. When greed or competition set in people can treat others unfairly, and not feel much remorse.…

Bitter Fruit is a passionate, fast paced book about how the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) held covert operations in Guatemala that helped overthrow the democratically elected president Jacobo Arbenz in 1954. This was a time when the US was under a lot of pressure due to the Cold War, and because the US feared the spread of communism and the impact it would have on our economy, we started to spy on Latin American countries like Guatemala. The espionage and covert operations that the CIA did were ultimately for the worst and these actions…
