Sammy is the prototypical teenage boy with a healthy interest in the opposite sex. He is very observant and descriptive. He tries his best to over emphasize the appearance of the three girls that he sees walking in the store. Some of his observations consisted of using a metaphor to compare the girls to bees. Sammy even goes as far as nick naming the girl he thinks is very attractive Queenie to show how dominant and more important she was over the other three girls. Sammy also describes the assets that Queenie has.” With the straps pushed off, there was nothing between the top of the suit and the top of her head except just her, this clean bare plane of the top of her chest down from the shoulder bones like a dented sheet of metal tilted in the light. I mean, it was more than pretty” (Updike 3). This quote is the perfect example of femme fatale, because it is an example of an attractive and seductive woman, esp. one who will ultimately bring disaster to a man.…

f Charles Murray in the essay “Are Too Many People Going to College” that you can not always base one's success off of their occupation or income but more so their happiness (Murray 251). To Rose’s understanding he feels that this is something commonly overlooked. His feelings are strong that everyday work is important to our society as a whole, and should not be devalued because of this preconceived idea that because you are working with your hands, physically laboring, you are less intelligent than say those who work in an office. Graff reviews this same concept, the misconception throughout our nation that those who have such white collar jobs are seemingly more inty discuss is the importance of personal finance. The cost of college is significant,…

In “A&P” by John Updike, Sammy takes a strong interest in the girls in their bathing suits that come into the supermarket he works at. It is clear that he views the girls in a sexual way by the way he describes Queenie from her “white prima donna legs” (1), to the way the straps of her bathing suit “were off her shoulders looped loosely around the cool tops of her arms” (1) causing her suit to slide down a little, how when she “turned so slow it made [his] stomach rub the inside of [his] apron” (2), how cute it was when she lifted “a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top” (3) and her friend whom he “liked better from the back” because she had “a really sweet can” (3). Sammy was so infatuated with them, noticing every detail about each of the girls, that he wanted them to notice him too. When the manager of the supermarket embarrasses them for wearing bathing suits, Sammy uses this opportunity to get their attention and ultimately impress them. Sammy says he quits “quick enough for them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch [him], their unsuspected hero” (4). He doesn’t stop to think about how quitting his job will affect his parents and his future; he only cares about impressing the girls and getting them to notice him. After his action he realized “how hard the world was going to be to [him] hereafter” (5) over girls that ended up not noticing him or being impresses and…

Consumer demand is one of many parts of the sugar trade but crucial to the survival and thriving love of the product. Sugar consumption approached nearly 10% of overall food expenditures for family's in the 1700s. After 1660 sugar imports always exceeded over all colonial products, that means that they had and wanted more sugar than any other product that was being shipped in from foreign countries. The sugar was shipped in something called a Hogshead, it was a big barrel weighing between 700 and 1200lbs, children loved to lick the remaining sugar left in the barrel after it has been emptied. People love the way sugar tastes, we have for longer than the 1500's, as a matter of fact sugar was cultivated and grown in New Guinea some 9000 years ago. The more slaves there was the more sugar was produced.…

This allowed a new category of women to emerge. In addition to the “promiscuous” or “domestic” woman, “Charity girls” were respectable working women who also engaged in sexual activity. Men would “treat” working women to drinks and other forms of entertainment, often in exchange for sexual favours6. Women who engaged in this type of activity too often would be criticized for being promiscuous, but in many cases it was necessary for them to survive. Women were still dependent on men for economic support because they were considered “second class” wage earners7. This is further evidenced by department store managers encouraging women to supplement their wages by finding a “gentleman friend”8. Therefore, it is clear that women could not financially support themselves and often turned to men for assistance. This further emphasizes the double standard, as women were required to maintain a balance between working respectability and being perceived as immoral. Men in the song are described as “villains”, which indicates a particular stance the song takes on working women and their relationships with men. Attempting to maintain this double standard would often place a woman’s good reputation in jeopardy, and many women rejected pleasure in favor of her own morality for this…

“It’s just extremely disappointing and aggravating to have paid all that money and have nothing to show for it other than debt.” proclaimed Michelle Polyakov, an English graduate from Drake University. Polyakov obviously feels that college is not worth the cost and that all someone has to show for the education is debt. College has been deemed, by some, that it is not worth the cost because of the financial loss, the future job security, and the need for “blue collar” jobs. Finances, job security, and the need for manual laborers are all major factors in the debate of college and its cost. The reason being is because not all people are meant to go to college, or their situation just isn’t ideal. College is a privilege, and not every job requires you to have a higher form of learning, but most do. By viewing the debt of a student after graduation, the job security of graduates, and the need for manual laborers, one can infer that college is not worth the cost.…

The cost of a university education has increased 12-fold in the past three decades. Most students pay for college with a combination of family, work, grants, scholarships, and loans. Few students have families who can pay for their education entirely. To pay for college, a student needs to work more than 48 hours a week on minimum-wage. Add that to the time needed to be successful with a full load of classes, and simply working your way through college today is impossible. Even a maximum federal Pell Grant only covers the cost of attending a community college, it leaves a large deficit on the bill for a university’s tuition. Everyone is competing…

To me, the foods that the girls eat are the embodiment of the delusion of acting "wealthy." For example, the "meat patties" that the girls choose to eat, the ones that were "sweating beads of inferior oils," sound like a disgusting attempt, on their part, to eat foods they associate with wealth. This nauseating creation of a poor man's foie gras (I assume the "pale, stiffening sauce" is supposed to be an even more…
