My Generation
My generation consists of those born between 1980 and 1994. My generation has been labeled a lot of things. We've been called Generation Y, Generation ME, Millennial’s, the Internet Generation, and even Generation Einstein. We have also been labeled the laziest generation ever. We are a cohort of kids that because of instant messaging, Myspace and Facebook, we seek instant gratification. We are impatient and unwilling to work hard, according to many, hence the name, Generation ME. All this “technology” generation wants is instant gratification. Although there are those who do not fit this description, most of the youth in this generation are so dependant on technology that they begin to become extremely lazy. Now, if a computer takes longer than 5 seconds to load a webpage, we think to ourselves, “I need a new computer, this one is too slow”. If a task is placed in front of us and we have to actually put effort into it rather than to use technology, we simply don’t want to do it. Studies show that 76% of youth today are texting 8-10 hours a day non-stop. This is true. As a matter of fact one day I was walking down the halls of opry mills mall and I saw this group of probably seven or eight girls. And you know when you pass a group of girls you expect there to be a lot of noise. Well in this case, when they passed I didn’t hear a single word. They were all not even paying attention to where they were going and looking down at their phones texting. I mean, what is the point in going to the mall with your friends if you are not going to even talk to each other. Now I hope this generation has not gotten so lazy to the point where they don’t even want to talk and let the phones do it for them. The thing that makes texting so popular is the fact that you can do it anywhere and anytime. The key word is “instant”. That is obviously what this generation is all about. Most people have become so used to texting that they can literally do it without even looking at the phone. They don’t even have to think about it, it just happens. That is the problem with this generation, we don’t
