Tang Dynasty Art Many of the Tang artists were scholars, especially studying the principals of Confucius. Their work was very minimalistic and the appearance is rigid. The second emperor, Taizong, was the ruler who reformed the government, social structures and the religious practices. During this time, there were three main religions, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. The people were free to practice wherever they pleased without conflict. Priests, however, were to practice their own religion to promote consistency in their prospective faiths.
In 712 to 756, Xuanzong ruled China and is said to be the most prosperous country in the world. Major advancements are engineering and technology was made during the Tang Dynasty. The most important invention was wood blocking, which allowed books to be printed in mass production. Other inventions include gun power (fireworks), porcelain (ceramics), map making, gas cylinders for natural gas, clock making and advances in medicine (Mark). Although the Tang Dynasty made great strides during their rule, they were overthrown by the Sung Dynasty.
The Bactrian camel was used by traders to travel on long journeys on the Silk Road. Bactrian camels carried 500 lbs. on their backs and can live 4 to 7 days without food or drink. They can drink 25 gallons of water in 10 minutes to replenish their bodies.
