Breadwinner Sparknotes
The book I chose to read was the Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. The genre of the book ranges from Young Adult, Historical Fiction, and Family Drama. The book consist of many characters crucial to the storyline, including Parvana. Parvana’s most important characteristics are bravery and maturity. She shows these values when she chose to cut her hair, pretending to be a boy. Parvana knew that if caught, she would be punished by the Taliban's but, she did it anyway to help her family to survive. There was also Shauzia, she wanted to leave, even if it meant abandoning her family. Based on that fact I feel as she was afraid of herself in Afghanistan and, if she could get away then she would no longer be afraid of herself and her environment. Shauzia was brave herself as she also dressed as a boy daily to support her family.
The book starts off with Parvana going out with her Father daily as she is his escort so she could get out and help him. Shortly after, the Taliban's arrested Father as he got an education in England and not in Afghanistan, which angered the Taliban's. Since Father was the only man in the house, the family and Parvana had to make a brave decision in making Parvana to look like a boy. They cut her hair, changed her clothes and gave her a new name. Parvana had no choice as she had to bring some income and food home each day for the family to survive.

With a storyline with all the events and turns occurring in the book, it brings you into the book to read more. It's as if you're there with Parvana. The book was an easy read as the story was interesting, and the words were easy to read and understand. With all great books comes an end but, this ending left you with a very big cliffhanger in which Parvana and her Father are on their way to Mazar to see if her family is still alive. It really makes you want to find the next book and read more on what happens with their

Parvana begins to notice other people’s suffering whilst working at the market and even the suffering of members of her own family. To Parvana; “The marketplace ceased to be interesting. She no longer laughed when a man got into a fight with a stubborn donkey. She was no longer interested in the snippets of conversation she heard from people strolling by. Everywhere, there were people who were hungry and sick. Women in burqas sat on the pavement and begged, their babies stretched across their laps. And there was no end to it. This would have made parvana street smart because she would have to become brave survive in the world with the Taliban.…

Shauzia makes the right decision to go to Afghanistan because she’ll no longer be under the Taliban’s control. Once she’s out of the country, she’ll be able to live on her own free will. After all, Shauzia is only 11 years old. Her life shouldn’t be filled with bombs, landmines, blood, deaths etc. In other words, her life shouldn’t be filled with violence. Shauzia stated that she was saving money, a little bit each day. “I’m getting out of here,” Parvana then replied “What? When?” Shauzia then answered that she would leave by next spring. I was overjoyed at the end of the book and I was ready for another exhilarating read. After this it took me a while to find another book that could match up to the previous one. But after a while I found a few more books that gave me the same exciting…
