Bev and Charlie know that they don’t have much longer to solve the mystery of Charlie’s adoption, but they are both fully committed to figuring it out, because they love each other too much to lose one another. Bev worries that Melanie has already told Dorothy so Charlie offers to let her stay at her house for the weekend.
INT. CHARLIE’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Bev waits in the living room while Charlie tells Joe and Doris the truth about what she has been up to. They are upset that she would bring a white girl into their house, because they could be accused of kidnapping.They let the girls know that there could be dangerous repercussions someone were to see her there. Bev thanks them for her help. They begin to chat and actually get along. Bev clearly enjoys being part of and actual family. They explain that they are stuck in their investigation, and, seeing how similar they are, Doris tells them the name of the adoption agent who they worked with to get Charlie.
INT. MARGARET’S HOUSE - DAY
Bev and Charlie sit with Margaret, the adoption agent. She explains that she technically isn’t allowed to talk to them, but she is very sympathetic to their situation so she does so anyway. She explains that Dorothy was in a home for unwed mothers that her agency worked with and that she did not want to give up Charlene, but that she had very little choice in the matter because she was only a teenager. They ask if she knows anyone else who can give more insight into the situation and she gives them the name Jan Finley and tells them that she lived at the home at the same time as Dorothy.
INT. JAN’S HOUSE - DAY
Bev and Charlie ask Jan about the home for unwed mothers and she tells them her incredibly sad story. They then ask about Dorothy and she tells them that her and Dorothy were friends for a while at the home, but that all she knew about her situation was that she wanted to keep her child and that she was in love with the father of her child, but that he died horrifically. BEV’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Bev reads a book on the sofa. She keeps looking at the door, as if she’s waiting for something to happen. There’s a knock at the door and she answers it. It’s Charlie. They chat for a minute before Dorothy comes out of another room and is furious that Charlie is there. Bev does not back down this time. She tells Dorothy that she’s going to tell the truth here and now. They will not take no for an answer. ( SHOWDOWN)
INT. BEV’s LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Dorothy admits that she wasn’t raped. She was in love with Charlene's father, but she got pregnant and when her parents found out, her father killed the father and Dorothy was forced into hiding (so no one would see her pregnant) and to give up her baby. She goes to her room and return with photos her and Charlene’s father. He is one of the men from the missing person’s file that the sorted through earlier in their investigation. The tough racist defense that Dorothy built against her past diminishes. (REALIZATION)
