Brief Summary: The Most Dangerous Game
One year later, Rainsford was happily walking around the jungle, looking for his prey. He had learned all the techniques General Zaroff had used for his hunting. He also made several maps of the jungle, so he knows his way around better and better. This prey he was looking for was not any random person, and was named Jack Cooper. Mr. Cooper was part of the crew and had been on the yacht with Rainsford. They weren’t always on a bad note, in fact them and Whitney were close friends. Zaroff had messed with Rainsford’s mind that he transformed into a more violent human and his mind is full of thoughts that control him. Mr. Cooper had been found wandering in the field in which the hounds stood. Rainsford saw him from Zaroff’s bedroom window. He’s …show more content…
Cooper and Rainsford, it turned out to be just as similar as the game between Rainsford and Zaroff. Mr. Cooper had made dangerous hidden traps in the muddy ground, from the trees, and under the trees. Rainsford was proud of the work that Mr. Cooper did and rewarded him. From the final trap in the dark, spooky jungle, Rainsford was thinking of a purpose. He is strong, knows how to get around, and is very intelligent. He could become new Ivan, Rainsford was thinking. He decided to purpose the idea to Mr. Cooper, “How would you like to be spared?” Mr. Cooper felt like he was falling into his own muddy trap. Mr. Cooper started questioning Rainsford, “Spare me? How so? If it is by murder, then no! I can find my way around here and I…” Rainsford cut off Mr. Cooper, “That can come in handy. I have something to purpose.” Mr. Cooper was curious, so he asked, “What have you came up with now?” Rainsford was straightforward with the question, “How would you like to help me out? You know, with the hunting? You have all the characteristics to help. Your life will be changed for the better.” Mr. Cooper didn’t want to accept Rainsford’s offer, but was too terrified to turn down an offer that could save him, “If you don’t hunt or threaten me again, then I am up to accept your offer.” “You are asking for a miracle, but I could make it work,” Rainsford was not happy with the response that Mr. Cooper made, but wanted to use him. I need him, I need him, Rainsford was …show more content…
Cooper left the room, Rainsford brought the game to Whitney’s notice. “You know how I told you about the hunting game, right,” Rainsford asked Whitney. Whitney replied, “Yes, why?” Rainsford was ready to just shout out why, but stayed settle, “I was thinking how good you might be at it. I mean you were out in that difficult, dangerous place for a year.” Whitney didn’t know how to respond, so he stayed quiet and sipped his drink. “I think you would do well. How about you play the game? We can start tomorrow,” Rainsford was ready to hunt Whitney. Whitney was curious about why Rainsford was asking this question, “Where is this coming from, Rainsford?” “I don’t need you around here. I want to see who wins,” Rainsford stood up and threw his glass, “I guess we’re starting tonight.” Rainsford went over to Zaroff’s pistol and shot it towards Whitney. Whitney ran out of the house, but Rainsford wasn’t far behind. On the way out, Whitney grabbed a knife that was in the belt that Mr. Cooper was wearing. When Whitney stumbled out the front door, Rainsford caught him and tackled him down. When they both went down, Whitney put the knife up towards Rainsford, but Rainsford knocked it out of his hand. Rainsford pointed the pistol at Whitney, but Whitney made Rainsford drop the pistol. Whitney grabbed the pistol and shot towards Rainsford once and missed. He shot another time, but missed again. When they both rolled on the muddy ground to where Whitney could move his arm, he shot

He lifted it up to find a knife with blood stains sitting under the pillow. Rainsford didn’t know what to do next, but he knew last night was one of the best he’s ever had. As he sits in the dining room and eats out of fine china, he thinks he might as well give hunting humans a try since killing two the last few days didn’t hurt him at all. He starts walking outside and locates the cellar that holds all the other prisoners from crashed ships. Whenever he walked in, the captives hopped up in excitement thinking they were being rescued because it was someone other than Zaroff walking in.…

In The Most Dangerous Game, Connell describes Rainsford, the protagonist, as a renowned hunter. Connell uses the opening conversation between Rainsford and Whitney, Rainsford’s companion on the yacht, to enlighten the reader to Rainsford’s attitude of indifference concerning the prey that he hunts. As fate would have it, Rainsford is marooned on an island where he meets another hunter, General Zaroff. As the story progresses, Rainsford begins to see the façade of civility disappear and the real nature of the General come to surface. The General explains how hunting man is the logical progression of their art and that they are actually kindred souls. Rainsford is appalled by the comparison of their two natures and clings to the moral high ground. That is until the General forces Rainsford to now become the prey. Rainsford, now the prey, calls upon not only his vast knowledge and experience of the hunt but also his primeval instinct of survival. Connell takes the reader through many twists and turns giving hope for Rainsford around each corner only to take it away. Due to the cunningness and resourcefulness of Rainsford, the General is given literally the best hunt of his life. In the end, Rainsford outsmarts the General…

Rainsford is at first very obstinate but through his experiences with Zaroff throughout the story he grows and understands how it really feels to be hunted and he gains empathy for the animals. We see this throughout his actions during the hunt. Rainsford starts to feel genuine fear and terror as he waits to see if he will make it through the day, we see this expressed once he starts to hear the hounds on page 78. Only one page later on page 79 the author tells us Rainsford now understands how an animal at bay feels. By the end we can infer he no longer sees hunting as a game, but as cruel entertainment. In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford changes his entire philosophy about hunting. For example, when Whitney disagreed with him about jaguars he said, “You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”(Connell). Rainsford believes animals have no understanding of what is happening, therefore, it’s okay to hunt them. He doesn’t care if they feel pain or understand death and shows no remorse. In addition, when General Zaroff set the hounds to get Rainsford, he “knew now how an animal at bay feels” (Connell). Rainsford has to run away, set traps, and continuously risk his life to have a better chance at surviving. He felt the way animals do when they are being hunted and finally understood…

Rainsford tries again and again to fall asleep at night, but he is helpless with his choice replaying in his mind. “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep.” Second, Rainsford’s anxiousness is shown because he is uneasy about the thought of not being able to see the day after next.
