There was a time in history when the oceans were overly polluted with trash of various sorts. The water was so polluted and the food source for the ocean life was diminishing. This was the habitat of the blowfish. Their food became so scarce they began to eat the very things that were polluting the waters. The blowfish began to mutate with what they were eating. The Bottle Blowfish came to be from a mutation between a plastic bottle and its consumer, the blowfish.…
It’s Friday night and after a grueling week at work, a gentleman decides to treat his girlfriend to a relaxing dinner at a nice seafood restaurant. They decide to splurge and order a very expensive lobster dish. The bill arrives and it is pricey. However, they think it’s worth it because they believe they have just eaten fresh quality “lobster”. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the lobster is a cheap substitute. “It emerged that in thirty five percent of lobster dishes, there are cheaper substitute seafood instead.”(Inside Edition). Suddenly, people aren’t quite as excited about the expensive lobster dish they just purchased. Muckraking still exists in 2016 as evidenced in Inside Edition’s…
In his article David Foster Wallace proposes that the world’s largest lobster-eating celebration may actually be a massive animal-abusing process comparable to the cruelty to that of the Aztec’s human-sacrificing ritual. Wallace introduces Maine’s annual Marine Lobster Festival (MLF) held in late June attracts thousands of tourists seeking to devour the “steak meat” of the Atlantic Ocean – lobster. A lobster is a crustacean, existing in the region since colonial times with such abundance that early settlers condemned lobster meat as low-class. Presently, lobsters are considered a luxurious dish, which is a misconception Wallace thinks the MLF is trying to change. The chaotic dining area and meaninglessly-long lines attract few locals, but Wallace…
The Carcinus Maenas, also known as the European Green Crab, is currently one of the most invasive species in the United States. The crab was originated in Europe, and nevertheless made its way to the United States in the 1800’s, by riding across the Atlantic ocean on a ship. After reaching the U.S, they traveled to Maine, where they currently are and have been for over a century. They were first spotted at Casco Bay in Portland, Maine in 1900, and made its way to Jonesport, Maine in 1951.…
After moving to Maine last summer, I was looking for a summer job. I was given the opportunity to fill in as a stern man for a local lobstermen in Falmouth, Maine. I took the offer without hesitating and was very excited to experience lobster fishing first hand on the Jerry Rig II, which was the name of lobsterman Jerry’s boat.…
Artemia, or commonly known as brine shrimp, live in hyper-saline lakes. Artemia begin as dormant cysts, which contains an embryo in a diapause state. When water temperature and salinity changes occur, the cysts rehydrate and releases the first growth stage, known as nauplius larva. The cysts are very small and about fifty could fit…
In 1983, a male killer whale was captured in the North Atlantic, at the age of 2, he was already 11.5 feet long. They named him Tilikum. Tilikum was first introduced at Sealand, at night they stored the whales in a “module”, a dark, metal 20 x 30 feet box for two-thirds of their lives. During the winter the orcas would be locked in from 5 pm to 7 am. February, 1991, Kelty Burn falls into the water, then Tilikum brings her down, and drowns her. In the newspapers it claimed that it was an accidental drowning. Sealand closed, and SeaWorld needed a breeder. So, SeaWorld purchased Tilikum. Blackfish is a documentary that follows story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken lives of several people, and presents major issues within the sea-park industry.…

Who does not love to see dolphins and whales flipping and doing tricks? Although the animals look happy and unharmed, there is a dark truth behind the captive marine life in amusement parks and zoos. Yes, attending zoos and marine life amusement parks are a part of childhood; but recently researchers have discovered just how cruel the environment is for the marine life in captivity. After studies of comparing the quality of life of marine animals in the wild and in captivity, there are multiple examples shown in Blackfish, PETA, and the Animal Welfare Institute that show that animals prosper and live longer in their natural habitats. Due to the cruelty endured by the captivated Orcas, all the SeaWorld parks should be shut down and the Orca whales should be set free to prevent further demise to their species.…
This experiment consisted of testing seashells in different levels of acid. The whole point is to educate everyone on the growing amount of acid in the oceans and what it does to marine life. During the experiment the seashells lost mass after they were put into acid. When this happens with the whole ocean, it serves as a threat.…
Fishing out of the keys, it was almost impossible to come back empty handed. Most of the time we would come back with a bloody boat and a cooler full of fish that my dad would need to filet right there on the dock. “Jeremy get the front lines.” “ Jeremy go wash these off.” “Jeremy this, Jeremy that.” I love to go fishing but I don’t really like the constant requests my dad makes nor how long it takes to catch a damn fish. Fishing is something that my dad and I can do together and even after I realized I’m not much of a fisherman, I do enjoy watching my dad filet his catches after a nice morning on the water. I remember one time, I watched as he sliced open fish after fish, all of their guts spilled out all over the dock and I tried to tell if it was a…
As we watch the Bursatella leachii,(sea slug), we notice that the distance between them is directly proportional to the time of day. As the sun because stronger, and higher in the day, the average distance between the sea slugs greatens. As the sun becomes weaker, the distance between the sea slugs lessens.…
