Something Fishy at Seafood Restaurants

It’s Friday night and after a grueling week at work, a gentleman decides to treat his girlfriend to a relaxing dinner at a nice seafood restaurant. They decide to splurge and order a very expensive lobster dish. The bill arrives and it is pricey. However, they think it’s worth it because they believe they have just eaten fresh quality “lobster”. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the lobster is a cheap substitute. “It emerged that in thirty five percent of lobster dishes, there are cheaper substitute seafood instead.”(Inside Edition). Suddenly, people aren’t quite as excited about the expensive lobster dish they just purchased. Muckraking still exists in 2016 as evidenced in Inside Edition’s

Some of these restaurants include Red Lobster, world famous Nathan's, and even local restaurants like Get Hooked (Inside Edition). Red Lobster is the nation's largest seafood chain” (Inside Edition). Many would think that because Red Lobster a large seafood chain their lobster would be real. However, that is not the case. Red lobster claims to serve lobsters bisque along with many other seafood dishes. However, when the lobster bisque was tested, one sample came back as one hundred percent langostino. “Langostino is a much cheaper fish that is more apart of the hermit crab family than the lobster family and cost just have as much as Lobster” (Inside Edition). According to the FDA, “soup with only langostino cannot be called lobster bisque”(Inside Edition). However, in some cases this wasn’t the seafood restaurant's’ fault. “A local seafood restaurant outside of Tamp called Get Hooked, had been buying frozen lobster from a vendor and didn’t realize that his lobster was not real”(Inside Edition, When asked about the lack of lobster in his lobster dishes the restaurant owner claimed that he was not trying to rip off his customers. The vendor had mislead him and he exposed that vendor to the …show more content…
When confronted with allegations of lobster fraud, Red Lobster responded with the following statement, “ that their most recent mixture of lobster contains both Maine lobster and Langostino lobster and Red Lobster said that they question the validity of Inside Edition’s test where they found one cup of bisque that only contained Langostino lobster”(Taylor). However, some restaurants like Sofia’s, a go to seafood restaurant in Manhattan, slammed the door in Inside Edition’s reporters face in denial when reporters went to go confront the restaurant” (Inside Edition). Red Lobster also said that they will be making changes to their menu to inform customers about what their lobster dishes actually contain. Not only does this affect the restaurants but it also affects the customers. Most people will think twice before ordering an expensive lobster

Also known as "beautiful swimmer," the blue crab is one of the more resilient of Chesapeake species, but its fate depends on many factors. With the drastic decline of the Bay's oysters, watermen began extending their crabbing efforts much later into the fall, the time they would normally have shifted to oystering. A decade later, the blue crab population has been cut in half! Many locals have made a career out of harvesting its seafood, and the annual harvest and many of its other attractions bring tourists and, in turn, revenue for the area. Blue crabs play a giant role in supporting the ecosystem and the community, and we need a way to help. Two solutions towards saving the native blue crabs would be to limit the amount of blue crabs harvested…

    Downey's Soup

Downey’s Soup Downey’s is an Irish tavern in Philadelphia created over 20 years ago by Jack Downey. Over the years, the fortunes of the restaurant have wavered, but the strength of some favorite menu items has helped it survive economic downturns. In particular, the lobster bisque soup has become increasingly popularity, but Downey’s efforts to market it have been sporadic. Never did Downey imagine that his lobster bisque would someday be the cause of an international trade dispute. Unbeknown to Downey, the Japanese have a strong penchant for lobster. When the Philadelphia office of the Japanese External Trade Organization (Jetro) asked Downey to serve his lobster bisque at a minitrade show in 1991, he began to think about mass production of his soups. The Japanese loved the lobster bisque. They gave Downey a strong impression that the soup would sell very well in Japan. At the time, Downey did not have a formal product line but that seemed to be only a minor obstacle. After the trade show, Michael Fisher, executive vice president for the newly formed Downey Foods Inc., was sent on an all-expenses-paid 10-day marketing trip to Japan by Jetro. (Jetro sponsors approximately 60 Americans for similar trips each year.) Although the interest expressed by the food brokers and buyers he met seemed to be more polite than enthusiastic, he did get an initial order for 1,000 cases of the lobster bisque. The only condition placed by the buyer was to reduce the salt content to comply with local Japanese tastes. Both Jetro and Fisher considered this initial order the beginning of rich export relationship with Japan. Fisher contracted a food processor in Virginia, adapted the recipe for the new salt content, and shipped the soup to Japan in short order. Visions of expanded sales in Japan were quickly dashed as the cases of soup were detained at customs. Samples were sent to a government laboratory and eventually denied entry for containing polysorbate, an emulsifying and…
